From Oakland to Iraq
No War! No Empire!
Return to the Oakland Docks!

Wednesday April 7th, 2004 on the anniversary of the April 7, 2003 Community picket shutdown and assault at the APL and SSA ports on Oakland Docks.

4pm: OPD Rally - 455 7th St at Broadway
(down the street from 12th St BART)

5pm: March - From West Oakland BART to the Oakland Docks

Take action on the one year anniversary of the April 7 shutdown of Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) and American President's Line (APL), which also marked the most violent attack on the anti-war movement in the US. SSA, the U.S. multinational shipping company, through it’s close ties with the Bush Administration, became a beneficiary of the war and corporate globalization in Iraq when they were awarded the contract to control the port at Umm Qasar, Iraq.

SSA is a much-hated corporation locally for their bad labor practices and union busting operations at home directed at the ILWU during their last contract negotiations. SSA is also the target of an international solidarity campaign against their attempt to privatize the port of Chittagong, Bangladesh, which would bust unions, and destroy jobs and working conditions.

Since then the City of Oakland has abandoned an independent investigation of the police attack and there have been no consequences to the Oakland Police or Mayor Jerry Brown.  This April 7th we will protest the war at home and abroad, by highlighting corporate attacks on workers, police attacks on civil liberties and military attacks on the people and sovereignty of Iraq. This will be a national day of action in conjunction with groups in New York.
