Baum Ready to take on Pelosi

On Monday, March 15, the Department of Elections finally certified that Terry Baum had received 1651 write-in votes -- 46 more than needed to qualify for the November election!

Terry is the first third party candidate to achieve the required number of write-in votes to obtain ballot status since 1968, when Huey Newton and other Black Panthers did it on the Peace and Freedom ticket. She is now the primary challenger to Democratic minority leader Nancy Pelosi in the 8th congressional district.

"I'm very grateful to my steering committee and all the people who worked so hard on what seemed like a rather quixotic campaign," said Baum after receiving the news from the DOE. "It shows that the Green Party is getting stronger, we can run a great grassroots campaign, and a lot of folks are fed up with our current Congresswoman," she added.

The wave of resentment against the policies of the current administration could definitely turn into a ground swell for Baum. Pelosi not only voted to "unequivocally supported" Bush’s invasion of Iraq, she used her power as minority leader to pressure other Democrats to follow her lead.

Even more egregious is her strong support for the Patriot act and her active involvement in bringing Al Gore and Bill Clinton to defeat Matt Gonzalez in the San Francisco Mayor's race. Given the large anti-war sentiment in the Bay Area and the large number of votes Gonzalez received, Baum has a clear chance to unseat the reigning Democrat in congress and shake up the status quo.

If you'd like to get involved in the Baum for Peace campaign in any way, email her at lilitheater [at] hotmail.com or go to her website to volunteer or make a donation.

There are over 7 months to the November elections. To beat the corporate sponsored Pelosi will take a real grassroots effort by Greens, Independents, and Democrats. Help stop the war machine by sending Terry Baum to Washington.

EMERGENCY MEETING FOR TERRY BAUM

Tuesday, March 23, 2004, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, March 23rd at the SFGP office, 1028 A Howard Street, between 6th
and 7th Streets. Meeting begins at 7:30 PM; all are welcome!

Terry Baum had previously been informed by the Department of Elections that she won her write-in campaign. But now, that decision is being reversed.
I distrust a government that overthrows Terry's write-in victory-- just as I am disgusted that the Golden Gate Parking Garage plans go forward even though responsible San Franciscans demand that the builders be held accountable to what citizens voted for.

Again and again we learn that votes mean nothing to the plans of the powers-that-be.

I completely endorse Terry and wish that her election victory be honored.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
