Libertarians against Musgrave Amendment

by SaveFreedom (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
Queers should look for allies in diverse political camps, including libertarians.
Dear sisters and brothers,
Walking thru the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, I noticed a leaflet on a lamp post. In the 'Loin. most political posters are leftwing. But this one was from libertarians, defending the right of same-sex couples to marry. So I copied down the URL, and found the info below.
When fighting the Musgrave Amendment, I think my fellow queers, and my fellow progressives, would do well to seek allies along a wide portion of the political spectrum.
Libertarians obviously favor individual freedom, even if they question whether governments should be in the marriage business at all.
True conservatives (as contrasted with reactionaries and fascists) love our U.S. Constitution, and dislike amending it. That's exactly why the Constitution's authors made it so hard to amend.
Don't write anyone off too soon. As the weeks roll by, I believe more and more U.S. citizens -- including some who don't like same-sex marriage -- will decide to leave our Constitution as it is.

[statement by LPAA:]

Oppose The Federal Marriage Amendment!

It's a presidential election year again. That means the major parties and candidates will seek to distract us from bad voting records and lost liberties by focusing attention on issues like flag buring and infidelity.

Unfortunately, gay people are the target this year.

Realizing his polling numbers are sinking and those much ballyhooed "weapons of mass destruction" are nowhere to be found, George W. Bush is now campaigning to pass a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriages.

Although libertarians question the "need" for couples (heterosexual or otherwise) to register with the government for permission to marry, we definitely oppose attempts to turn any group of people into second-class citizens. That is exactly what this proposed amendment would do: permanently create a seperate class of people which the government can legally discriminate against.

That is not only bad policy, it's downright UnAmerican.

The Libertarian Political Action Alliance is responding to the amendment proposal with emergency outreach flyers and suggested letters to the editor. We hope that you will print out and distribute(especially to those in the GLBT community) whichever flyer strikes your fancy and submit a letter to the editor on this issue.

Other generations had to grapple with racist laws, gender discrimination and youth issues. In 2004, we are seeing a whole group of peaceful people turned into scapegoats and fodder for far-right wing fundraising. Let's not allow George W. Bush and his cronies to be successful!
