PUEBLO Update!

by repost of email
Update on the ongoing struggle at People United for a Better Oakland.
The Work and Struggle for Justice Continues!

What has happened since the last update:
In our last update we informed PUEBLO supporters that we were attempting
to work out political differences with a faction of PUEBLO board and
CCSPA committee members through a negotiation process. We are unhappy to
announce that after two sessions, negotiations have broken down. Despite
our attempts to resolve the conflict and develop a process that would
have best allowed our work to continue, all PUEBLO staff (including Akua
Jackson, Nemesis DeLoatch, Alicia Schwartz, Gabriela Gonzalez and Nikki
Dove) have been laid off and Dawn Phillips, the Executive Director has
been fired as of Monday March 8, 2004.

In these past two weeks we received overwhelming support from hundreds
of community members and allies who we want to thank for all your
donations, phone calls, letters and petition signatures.

What now?
It is clear to us from the numerous conversations that we have had with
our members in the last two weeks that the need for the work that we are
doing is stronger than ever. What would Oakland be like without PUEBLO?
The community members we have organized around issues of environmental
and economic justice insist that we continue our organizing campaigns
and base-building work. Numerous allies have expressed a need to ensure
that Oakland's progressive movement be able to continue to grow with our
participation.

As a result, we have decided to take our work with us and embark on the
challenging task of building a new organization immediately. We have
already secured a new office and we are beginning to seek fiscal
sponsorship, raise money etc.. We have also committed to prioritizing
our organizing work with community members in this next phase. It is our
firm belief that the foundation of the new organization must be rooted
in base-building, leadership and political development work with poor
and working class adults and youth of color. This work was central to
our vision before and we intend to keep it central. To be able to do
this, all 6 ex-PUEBLO staff members plan to continue doing all aspects
of our work until the new organization is fully realized.
