"PEACE BY PEACE: WOMEN ON THE FRONTLINES"
New College Cultural Center, 766 Valencia St., S.F.

In celebration of International Women's Week, please join us for a not to be missed special evening and showing of this critically acclaimed breakthrough documentary film.

Special guest presenter, Jean Shinoda Bolen MD, author of "The Millionth Circle," will be available for Q&A following the film.

Women around the world are joining together, standing up for peace, advocating restorative justice, healing their communities, and educating future generations that war is not the answer. "PEACE BY PEACE: Women on the Frontlines" celebrates these women in a breakthrough documentary of their unheralded work.

This emotionally-charged and moving feature-length documentary weaves the personal stories of ten strong, determined, and compassionate women, as they challenge traditional paradigms of a woman's role in building peace in countries such as: Afghanistan, Argentina, Bosnia, Burundi and the United States.

LORA GORDAN AND BRIAN AVERY, WITNESSES TO THE OCCUPATION
New College Theater, 777 Valencia St., San Francisco

Laura Gordon is a 20-year-old American Jew who moved to Rafah two days after Rachel Corrie was killed and witnessed the murder of Tom Hurndall by the Israeli Military. She spent over 10 months living with the Palestinians in Occupied Rafah. She worked primarily in media work and documentation; and also to liase between the Rafah community and the international community through summer camp projects, cooperative building projects, and English teaching.

Brian Avery was shot in the face by the Israeli Military in Jenin on April 5, 2003 while wearing a bright red jacket. When he raised himself from the ground, witnesses saw that his left cheek had almost been totally shot off. A doctor wanted him transferred to a hospital inside Israel, but his departure was delayed because the Israeli military refused to grant his ambulance safe passage for more than an hour. Brian has already undergone three reconstructive surgeries and faces at least two more in the future.

Lora and Brian were both volunteers with the International Solidarity Movement. The ISM is a Palestinian-led movement of Palestinian and international activists working to raise awareness of the struggle for Palestinian freedom and an end to the Israeli occupation. ISM utilizes nonviolent, direct action to confront and challenge the illegal Israeli occupation forces and policies.

Donations will be accepted and will go to the Brian Avery Medical Fund to help with his astronomical medical bills.

This event is sponsored by the Northern California Support Group for the International Solidarity Movement. For more information contact: 510-236-4250,

"In the tradition of Woody and Dylan" - Bonnie Raitt

Wednesday March 24th, 7pm
AN EVENING OF SONG
With JIM PAGE
New College Cultural Center, 766 Valencia Street, San Francisco

“Jim's been writing great topical songs for as long as I can remember, bringing his acute wit and wry humor to a host of subjects that can really use both. In the tradition of Woody and Dylan, he cuts right to the heart with music you actually enjoy listening to. I'm a longtime admirer.”
- Bonnie Raitt

"Many songwriters have been an influence, but somehow for me it was out of reach. Jim Page was the one to bring songwriting within my reach. Watching and listening to him make his songs started me thinking about it. Making coherency with words and music, Jim taught me a lesson.”
- John Trudell

“Jim Page's music is the kind of great theater that makes you sit on the edge of your seat. One of my favorite writers and performers...always on the money, and always amazing.”
- Caroline Aiken

“If Jim Page ain’t the bastard son of Woody Guthrie I’m T-Bone Walker”
- Robert Hunter

“The forests of the Northwest resonate with the music of Jim Page… Listening to his music I find myself crying one minute and laughing the next. Jim Page's music takes you on a journey of self-discovery.”
- Julia Butterfly Hill

“Jim Page’s songs get right to the point. He looks at the world clearly and reports what he sees with compassion, humor and a biting sense of irony. And boy! can he sing and play. If you’re ever going to get the message, this is the messenger to get it from.”
- U. Utah Phillips

Sponsored by the Center for Education and Social Action at New College of California.

CALVIN WELCH: "HOW DID WE GET HERE? - A HISTORICAL LOOK AT SAN FRANCISCO HOUSING AND LAND USE BATTLES FROM THE 1970'S FORWARD"
Housing and Land Use Seminar Series - Last Thursday of each month
New College of California, 777 Valencia Street, S.F.

Long-time activist Calvin Welch presents a historical overview of San Francisco land use issues, in a talk entitled, "How did we get here? - A historical look at San Francisco Housing and Land Use battles from the 1970's forward." The monthly seminar series is sponsored by the San Francisco Green Party and the Center for Education and Social Action at New College of California.

This is the second workshop in a monthly series that will be a great opportunity to educate yourself, share your thoughts, and get involved with local advocacy groups trying to create a better San Francisco. The series will take place on the last Thursday of each month at New College, located at 777 Valencia Street.

The seminar series includes a diverse range of topics and speakers—San Francisco Supervisors, activists, attorneys, developers, nonprofit builders and city planners—policymakers and advocates from all sides of our housing and development battles. Here's a chance for you to consider diverse, frequently contradictory opinions, and make up your own mind on important issues facing the city. The seminars should prove informative, lively and entertaining.

Free and open to the public.
