Earth (First!) Day Modesto April 17th

by DAAA Collective (modanarcho [at] yahoo.com)
Reclaim Earth Day for the Earth - Not Corporate Vendors! Various local community groups will be on hand to provide free food (FNB), show films, and generally create an autonomous zone.
WHERE: Graceada Park, Needham Street, Downtown Modesto CA

WHEN: Sat. April 17th

TIME: 10 am - 6 pm

What’s Wrong with Earth Day in Modesto? Modesto City has been “celebrating” Earth Day for over 15 years, and recently the City of Modesto has been steering the direction of Earth Day. The city receives thousands in donations for the event, and also rakes in the cash from the various vendors that buy up space at the park. Instead of booths, workshops, and speakers talking about how to make our cars more fuel efficient, how we all got screwed in the latest energy crisis, or how the Bush administration is working more for corporations than people, we instead get stuck with corporate vendors in place of non-profits and eco-friendly groups.

CELEBRATE A DIFFERENT EARTH DAY- FOR THE EARTH NOT FOR PROFIT! Come and enjoy with others a day instead of over priced un-healthy foods and un-earthy carnie faire, a day of free food, entertainment, and learning! We will be showing films, creating community media, silk screening, cooking healthy vegetarian food, giving away free books and literature, and also creating things! Instead of consuming - let us create! Instead of destroying - let us build! Let’s make this Earth First Day!

FREE FOOD (NOT BOMBS) Throw that Atkins diet out the window! If it’s tasty, healthy, feel good, (and cruelty free) food you want, that’s what you’ll get! Food Not Bombs, who serves to the local homeless community, will be serving free to all. Help us end homelessness, and hunger.

FREE FILM SHOWINGS All day we will be showing and running films that relate to the earth, the environment, and what we can do to take action against oppressive forces trying to destroy it. Topics include: Critical Mass: Bicyclists take to streets for oil alternatives., and to liberate desires. PickAx!: When the forest service burns a forest for logging, a community blockade erupts. Animal Liberation: Various

DON’T JUST CONSUME - CREATE! A system based on private property ensures that we do create in this society - but not for ourselves, our communities, or under our own conditions. Take back the means of production with us (at least on a small scale), and help us create within the shell of the old. Let’s ignite the spark of sustainability, autonomy, and true democracy!
