3/18 Protest Jerry Brown re: PUEBLO

by friend
LET'S FILL UP THE ROOM AND SPREAD THE WORD -----
WE ARE HOLDING JERRY BROWN ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS BEHAVIOR.

On Thursday, March 18th at 6:30 PM, the Ethics Commission will hear the complaint
filed against Mayor Jerry Brown and Council Member Danny Wan by Rashidah Grinage,
obo PUEBLO. We are exceedingly fortunate to represented at the hearing by Bob Bloom,
one of the award-winning team of attorneys in the Judy Bari law suit .

The allegations are that Mayor Brown violated the Sunshine Ordinance when he
introduced a written proposal at the Finance Committee meeting of Oct. 14th which
had not been properly noticed. Danny Wan violated the Code of Ethics by allowing the
Mayor's proposal to be discussed and voted on, which would not have been allowed had
the individual been a member of the public. On January 5th, 2004, the Ethics
Commission unanimously decided that the complaint had sufficient merit to warrant a
full, evidentiary hearing, despite the Mayor’s published claims to the contrary.

The Mayor's clear intent was to try to prevent the Committee's taking an action that
would have held the police department financially accountable for the huge payouts
which resulted from police misconduct and brutality law suits.

We have instructed the Ethics Commission to issue subpoenas to Mayor Brown, Council
Member Wan, their Chiefs of Staff, and also to Police Chief Richard L. Word. We have
also asked Nancy Nadel and Willow Rosenthal to testify to their experiences on that
afternoon.

The Ethics Commission is scheduled to meet in Hearing Room 2 at City Hall.

Please help us get out the word and the media. To our knowledge, this will be the
first time that Mayor Brown has been issued a subpoena to appear at a hearing in
which he must defend his actions to the Oakland community. Since the Mayor hopes to
become the next Attorney General of the State of California, a ‘finding’ by the
Ethics Commission that he violated our Sunshine Ordinance will be a stain on his
record that he will have to try to explain away during his campaign.
