UC Berkeley Wednesday: Panel Discussion on Opposing the US Empire
Palestine and Iraq:
A Panel Discussion on Opposing the US Empire
at the University of California, Berkeley
A Panel Discussion on Opposing the US Empire
at the University of California, Berkeley
Wednesday, March 3
7:00 p.m.
110 Wheeler Hall
Featuring:
Abbas Kadhim, Iraqi Native and Doctoral Candidate, Near Eastern Studies, UC Berkeley
Shireen Qaru and Mohamad Raad, Students for Justice in Palestine
Jobert Poblete, Berkeley Stop the War Coalition
One need only look to the brutal, 37-year-old Israeli occupation of Palestine for a study in the cruelties of empire. For far too long, the antiwar movement in America has ignored the plight of the Palestinian people; in the face of Bush’s domination of Iraq, with the US Army adopting Israeli tactics to crush resistance, the links between the two occupations are obvious and the antiwar movement must oppose them both with equal passion.
At the same time, with thousands of Iraqis and hundreds of American soldiers dead, Americans are increasingly coming to see the Iraqi invasion for what it really was — a war for oil and empire. There are no weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein’s capture has only strengthened the Iraqi resistance, and the hundreds of billions spent on the military come at a time of high unemployment and decreased access to higher education.
Come to a panel discussion with student activists — with experience fighting the occupations of Palestine and Iraq — and hear them speak on the current state of the occupations and the ways in which they are tied together. Then, join the discussion over the direction of the antiwar movement, the role the two occupations play in Bush’s quest for empire, and how we can fight back.
Sponsored by Arab Student Union, Berkeley Stop the War Coalition, International Socialist Organization, Muslim Students’ Association, and Students for Justice in Palestine
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact 510-928-1503 or [mgs [at] berkeley.edu].
