photos from Women's Voices Rise Up

A few pictures from the 3rd annual "Women's Voices Rise Up" show.
The third annual
"Women's Voices Rise Up"
The Culture Of Resistance To The Everlasting War.

I came to this event having never previously seen any of the artists scheduled to perform... now I want to see all of them again and again! OK, to be accurate, I'd seen one member (Susan Appe, the event organizer) of one of the groups (Samsara) sing several times before with her other band, Folk This!

What a night.

I've been to more than a few events where, if you were lucky, one or two of the performers were pretty good. Too often, you have to sit through the opening acts that are... well, they're learning.

But not this night. Every performer kicked ass. Every performer reminded me how much incredible talent there is out there... how many great artists that don't get the attention they deserve.

DJ LP kept us all groovin in the warm up to the show and dropped beats for the SU XtraCreditCru's breakin and poppin.

A Kenyan Indian explosion on the national US spoken work scene, Shailja Patel was 2001 Lambda Slam Champion and 2000 Santa Cruz Slam Champion. When you hear her, it's easy to see why.

§Uchechi Kalu, poet
by Matt Fitt (matt [at] Monday Mar 1st, 2004 3:51 AM
Uchechi Kalu is a Nigerian-born poet, performer, teacher and survivor of life, who has conducted writing workshops at universities, prisons, high schools, after school programs, and with the SF WritersCorp program.

Her "serious" pieces were insightful, sad, empowering... and I loved them... but what really got me was her outrageously funny piece in the guise of a response to a Craig'sList personal ad where, while jabbing into issues of race, sex, class and more, her puns and retorts were so damn funny that even she was busting up. I want more!

Samsara: Passionate Rovolutionary A capella.

Loren Olds, Rebecca Anders and Susan Appe are activists, teachers, musicians and artists, and as Samsara they have been performing everywhere from the streets to the Union Halls.

I recommend seeing them at every opportunity.
