Join Local Activists for a Report Back from the Recent World Social Forum.

One-hundred thousand people from 120 countries gathered in Mumbai\Bombai, India for the fourth annual World Social Forum (WSF), January 16-21. Hosted by a South Asian nation where poverty afflicts millions, the forum stood face to face with devastating inequality and people struggling for change. The Mumbai forum marks an important turning point for the WSF, which began in 2001 in Porto Allegre, Brazil.

What was accomplished at the WSF in Mumbai, India? What questions and challenges face the WSF? Where is the WSF heading? And what is the significance of the WSF for social movements in the US and around the world?

Join us for an evening of first-hand reports, video and dialogue.

Speakers include:

Jeff Conant, Coordinator of a popular education project on environmental health with the Hesperian Foundation and a member of the People's Health Movement environmental health and justice working group. He was also involved in anti-war and anti-bush networking at the WSF.

Nadia Khastagir, representative of Global Resistance based in El Cerrito, California, she will report on the Peoples' Forum Against Coca Cola - the launch of the
internationalization of the campaign in support of the struggles in India and Colombia.

Ali Tonak, photographer and video producer with indymedia, he traveled to Mumbai to help with IMC and Turkish independent radio coverage of the forum. He will present a video of the forum.

Martha Wallner (moderator), a media activist, she participated in a panel on media and globalization at the WSF.

Sponsored by the Activism and Social Change Emphasis and the Media Studies MA Program at New College of California. For more information: Jon Garfield, 415-437-3425 or jon@newcollege.edu .
