S.F. half-closes Marry-In window

San Francisco city-county bureaucrats will allow merely 52 couples to get marriage licenses each day, as of Feb. 23. This new restriction half-shuts the window of opportunity for S.F.'s historic same-gender Marry-In, which started Feb. 12.

Many same-gender couples will therefor be unable to wed before a court order shuts the window totally.

Around two hundred couples had lined up outside City Hall before 8AM on Monday the 23rd. Then a bureaucrat came out and told them that standing in line wouldn't help them anymore; that they must telephone to get an appointment to apply for a marriage license; and that only 52 such appointments would be allowed per day.

Most of the couples remained in line, using cell phones to call in, while comparing results with each other.

After the bureaucrat went back inside City Hall, a community activist spoke to the fiancees, saying: "Fifty-two couples per day is NOT enough. After you finish phoning to get an appointment, use your cell phones to call city politicians, and tell them that 52 is not enough." Some couples indicated they would do so.

An hour later, a new picket sign appeared, which read:
