Bush and Senate Republicans Obstruct Unemployment Extensions

by Todd Davis (neoxz34 [at] hotmail.com)
A short article about unemployment extensions.
An Amendment by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) to bring the unemployment extensions issue to a vote was blocked by Bush, and Senate Republicans on February 11, 2004. The Amendment to the Highway Construction Bill would have probably approved the unemployment extensions, that were already authorized by the US House of Representatives.

An estimated 400,000 workers are being cut off of unemployment by Bush, and Senate
Republicans. The anemic job creation rates have created an economic environment, where unemployment extensions, are needed now.

Bush, and Senate Republicans antiworker, and antiunion legislative maneuvers will probably be held accountable at the ballot box. President Bush lied about being a compassionate conservative, and now he has enlisted Senate Majority leader Bill Frist
into his war against the American Worker, and the middle class.

Email the US Senate now to extend unemployment benefits.

The economy created just 21,000 jobs in February of
2004. Bush, and many Senate Republicans have managed to cut off 760,000 people from their unemployment extensions.

Many of these people are unable to pay for food for
their children, health insurance, car payments, and
housing payments. Still many Senate Republicans
continue to act as if the funds are not available.

Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has come
out in favor of unemployment extensions. Senator
McCain, and Senator Dole have also endorsed the
extensions.

Keep on emailing the Senate to approve the extensions.

Became one of the thousands to help our President with the Transportation Security Administration. Unfortunately I was reduced in force. Now my unemployment has ended and I no longer can receive an extension. Even though upon being RIF'd I was given the information on how to request an extension. Seems to me that I did my duty for our president and our country, to make a more secure way to travel. But, now I am left on the short end of the stick.

Senator Maria Cantwell offered another amendment to try to prevent 1.1 million laid off workers from being cut off their unemployment extensions on March 31, 2004.
The Bush Administration, and some Republican leaders in the Senate have again obstructed the Cantwell Amendment, and cut off 1.1 million workers from their extensions.

The need for unemployment extensions is severe in many areas, because of low job creation rates. Children of the unemployed are going without food in many areas,
and eviction, and foreclosure rates are increasing. Workers need the Senate to approve the unemployment extensions now, so that they have a few more weeks to look for work.

Republican Senators Voinovich, and Senator Grassley have expressed an interest in extending unemployment benefits, or of at least allowing another vote. The unemployment extensions may be picking up bipartisan support.

Email the Senate to reauthorize the unemployment extensions:

The Cantwell Amendment failed again on May 12, 2004, even though the amendment had 59 votes. The Amendment to extend unemployment benefits was on a corporate tax bill, which fell one vote short 59-40.

As a result, 1.1 million laid of workers will be left with nothing as Republican leaders in the Senate, such as Senator Frist, continued their war against the American worker. The
children of many of the unemployed are hungry, and malnourished. Many of the unemployed are either already homeless, or facing the prospect of evictions, or foreclosures because of Bush, and the US Senate.

Senator Kerry was once again not present for this critical vote for unemployment extensions, and was campaigning in Kentucky. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell also voted against the unemployment extensions, after having said he supposedly favored the extensions.
