Do or Die Cascadian Resistance to Species Extinction: Save the Species! Cascadia wide Day of Action

PLEASE FORWARD FAR AND WIDE!!

Monday February 23rd, join the Cascadia Rising Eco-Defense Network and Back to the WALL in a region wide day of resistance to species extinction and forest destruction in your back yard! Protests are planned in 8 cities in 3 states: Ashland, OR - Bellingham, OR - Detriot, OR - Eugene, OR - Eureka, CA - Olympia, WA - Portland, OR - Wenatchee, WA

For exact protest times and locations visit www.cascadiarising.org/sam/sam3.php

Bush and Mark Rey (former timber industry lobbyist / Undersecretary of Agriculture in charge of the federal, public lands timber sale program) just released a final draft of a plan to eliminate "Survey and Manage" species protections. Survey and Manage was created as a result of the Spotted Owl controversy of the 80's and 90's mandates that surveys be made for rare and little known species before any timber sale in western California, Oregon, or Washington takes place - a basic "look before you log" requirement.

Survey and Manage has been a lynchpin of combating timber sales under the legal system for years - and was the basis of the Straw Devil / Solo / Clark timber sale victories last summer.

Some things to think about:
* These and other victories will now all but certainly be reversed. As many as 100 timber sales deemed illegal over the last decade may be reopened.
* Several hundred rare and poorly studied species will lose all protection under the plan, which should take effect within a few months; already the agencies charged with looking for these species have lain off virtually their entire survey staff.
* The decision could also reopen the original Spotted Owl lawsuit under the federal Endangered Species Act which was the most significant forest management controversy in modern times.
* Timber sale planning will be greatly expedited in Cascadia.
* This is only one of several other MAJOR changes to environmental laws in the past year - e.g., the Healthy Forest Initiative, downgrading of the Aquatic Conservation Strategy, the elimination of Clinton's Road-less Rule, the expansion of so called Categorical Exclusions, etc. etc..

While mainstream environmental groups scramble to access the damage to their legal system tactics, others are increasingly realizing that a new era of "lawless logging" is now upon us and that only massive public outcry can hope to make a difference.

We ask you to join the resistance to species extinction, environmental collapse, and corporate greed. Please be there February 23rd!

Oak woodlands of Shasta are struggling to survive the onslaught of Knauf fiberglass and their NOx emmisions, given excess after buying credits from Sierra Pacific. Knauf is a German company that pollutes too much for the environmentally aware greener Germany. WTO "free trade" agreements allow polluting corporations like Knauf to operate in lower income communities like Shasta Lake City against the will of the local people. Their contributions to the community besides a few out of town specialist employees are spewing fiberglass particulates and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) the principal component of smog, forming ground level ozone (O3)..

Biodiversity of oak woodlands includes several salamanders unique to the area, also interspersed vernal pools that have plants adapted to standing winter water and dry hot summers. The 12 + endangered plant species like Butte meadowfoam (Limnanthes if u prefer science talk) found in vernal pool habitat are endemic to the region, found nowhere else besides vernal pools..

City Council of Redding has shown favoritism to polluting industries and unsustainable development with immense petroleum derived parking lots 4 SUV gas guzzling Mal-Warts..

Canyon Hollow land siezure attempt by the developer/politician combo of Paul Edgren, Pat Kight and Micheal Pohlmeyer would benefit the wealthy developer and suffocate the Sacramento River tributary with petroleum run-off and needless culverts. The salmon, steelhead and rainbow trout that migrate upriver need the stability of the riparian stream intact. Uphill clearcutting of oaks begun the downward spiral of erosion, flooding and sedimentation of the stream, choking fish eggs with silt and clay..

While lower income people are evicted from motels in the name of urban renewal, monoculture McMansions spring up everywhere with water draining lawns and wide pavement. The sacred vernal pools and oak woodlands contain many plant species that are at risk of extinction, yet the right wing political climate of Redding seems more focused on military patriotism and homophobic repression to care anything about the vanishing oak woodland ecosystems..

Knauf keeps spewing NOx in the air and causing smog in the valley..
