*California Safe Schools

HISTORY
California Safe Schools, a coalition of over 45 organizations was established in 1998 by Robina Suwol, parents, students, environmentalists, physicians and concerned community members, after Robina's sons and other students were sprayed by a Los Angeles Unified gardener in a hazardous material suit. In 1999, one year from the date of spraying, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the 2nd largest district in the nation, unanimously adopted one of the country's best school pest management programs. This policy was the first to embrace the "Precautionary Principle" and includes parents right-to-know about chemicals being used on school sites. This grassroots effort later led to the California Healthy Schools Act 2000 legislation. Today California Safe Schools helps others around the state with school chemical use issues and is vigilant in watch dogging the LAUSD policy implementation.
