New Appeal Filed to Save Kevin Cooper
The filing claims that state prosecutors and investigators used false evidence and suppressed other evidence that could be used to prove Cooper is innocent.
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Attorneys for a California man convicted of hacking four people to death two decades ago filed a new appeal with a San Francisco court seeking to block his Tuesday execution.
Lawyers for Kevin Cooper, 46, filed the appeal with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday evening asking the court to halt the execution and grant the defense permission to file a second habeas corpus petition in the widely watched case. Normally, federal law allows only one habeas corpus -- improper imprisonment -- petition in a case.
