OAKLAND -- Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said Friday there are too many signs Kevin Cooper is innocent and the state should not go forward with his execution next week.

Joined by other clergy outside Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland, Jackson responded to a federal judge's ruling Friday declining to block Cooper's execution. The judge rejected the argument of Cooper's lawyers that lethal injections are cruel and unusual punishment.

VIENNA, Austria - The mayor of the Austrian city where Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his bodybuilding career has appealed to the California governor to stop the execution next week of convicted murderer Kevin Cooper, his party said Saturday.

On January 30, Schwarzenegger announced that he was denying clemency for Cooper, who is scheduled to go to the death chamber on February 10. Schwarzenegger wouldn’t even grant a hearing to provide public review of the evidence--making Kevin the first death row prisoner to be denied clemency without a public hearing since the death penalty was reinstated in California in 1978.
