Schwarzenegger's Joke Raises Ire
"People are poor in this state now," the governor said. "With the economy going down, people have no clothes anymore. Look what happened to Janet Jackson."
Brown and her 15-year-old son, Jake, watched the governor's remarks in their Sunnyvale apartment. Jake has cerebral palsy. He communicates through a light-operated talking computer. The state now pays his mother $10.50 an hour to provide care at home, but the governor wants to completely eliminate that program. Without it, Jake might need to be put into an institution, costing the state many times more than is paid now.
"We do not want to be poor," Jake said through his computer.
