WildAid, a non-profit wildlife conservation organization based in San Francisco, presents “Sharks in the Park” on September 21, 2002, at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Officially proclaimed by Governor Davis, WildAid Day will be devoted to increasing public awareness about one of our ocean’s most fascinating and endangered creatures, sharks. Our goal is to help children, adults and young adults discover more about the beauty of these creatures, how they play a crucial role in our marine ecosystem and how everyone can become active players in conserving the delicate balance of our natural resources. Featured at the event will be WildAid’s life-size 50 ft. helium whale shark balloon soaring high above the Academy as a landmark and main attraction. In addition, 3 other life-size shark balloons will be on display in the main lobby and around the main courtyard as part of our exhibit. WildAid also plans to launch a brand new shark exhibition, an eight panel exhibit providing in-depth information about shark populations and their conservation. In partnership with other organizations, WildAid has developed 2 interactive CD Roms. One contains a shark cartoon and games for youngsters while the other is focused on interesting facts about various shark species. Both will be available, so that the children and students can have fun while they learn. Younger children will also be entertained and earn prizes with unique games and contests such as ‘pin the fin on the shark’, special shark quizzes and name-the-whale-shark. As an added attraction, the San Jose Sharks mascot, Sharkie, will be making a special appearance to sign autographs and help support our cause. WildAid supporter Peter Benchley, author of Jaws, will be attending the event and will be available to sign his new book. For more information please check out our website at www.wildaid.org
