RECLAIMING THE COMMONS PRESENTED BY KARL LINN The enclosure of the Commons, the privatizing of our commonwealth of public land, air, and water must be opposed. Most recently, the last remnant of public land, namely, easily accessible community gardens, which have become vital neighborhood meeting places, have been put on the auction block in New York City. To secure land for community gardens, cities must incorporate guidelines in their general plan that allocated land for permanent community gardens close to people’s homes. One lot per block would do much to nurture the growth of neighborhood community.
