"The Role of the Independent Press During Wartime" An IPA Panel Discussion on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 PM As the United States goes to war, critical voices are more important than ever. On October 25, independent journalists, editors, and publishers will ask themselves how they can defend civil liberties, report facts and policy alternatives in the face of misinformation, and actively promote a national conversation about the war. Panelists include Michelle Alexander, Director of the ACLU's Racial Justice Project; Farhad Azad, publisher of the online Afghan culture and arts publication afghanmagazine.com; Adam Hochschild, a former editor of the Vietnam-era Ramparts magazine, co-founder of Mother Jones magazine, and author of many books, most recently King Leopold's Ghost; Martin Lee, award-winning Investigative journalist; Annalee Newitz, culture editor of the Bay Guardian; and Julie Reynolds, editorial director of El Andar, "the Latino magazine for the new millennium." www.indypress.org
