Sheldon Norberg, author of the acclaimed memoir Confessions of a Dope Dealer, (and co-founder of the Underworld Opera Company) premiers his one-man adaptation of his book at the intimate Bannam Place Theater - a venue rapidly gaining stature as one of the foremost presenters of solo works in the Bay Area. Directed by Bill Allard, Confessions of a Dope Dealer is not a diatribe, a lecture, or a fire and brimstone rant about drugs. Rather, Norberg unfolds a personal tale about his experiences with the recreational and mercantile aspects of dope consumption in a comic, poignant fashion. His examination of the factors leading to his slip into drug abuse will sound familiar to many, but his excesses will seem unbelievable to most. This show offers a catalyst for the often difficult discussion with teens about drugs. Why not bring your teen with you? The War on Drugs has consumed 30 years of our country's history and its impact has been undeniably negative. Norberg didn't take up drug use to become a criminal. Like any American youngster, his voracious appetite for new information and desire for untried experiences, drove him to explore the world around him. That world contained drugs. How he responded to this fact is what makes this show unique and compelling. Although Norberg is now active in consciousness, healing and Harm Reduction communities, he was a career dope dealer. At a particularly Saturnian point in his life, he was driven to craft this tale, noted by the SF Chronicle as, "Irony that, had it been rolled together by Pynchon or even Updike, could not be anymore 'stocious' (to borrow some of Norberg’s extraordinary lingo.)" Join Sheldon as he explores this world of complex dynamics, and staggering contrasts of light and dark.
