The Coalition to Rehire Alia and Hiam, made of labor organizations and councils, the Arab community, Muslim community, women’s organizations, street theater performers and student groups, will hold a rally to protest Macy’s racist firings of Alia Atawneh and Hiam Yassine, two Palestinian women fired after September 11th. The rally comes after months of pressuring Macy’s officials to meet the Coalition’s demands and educating the broader community on the issue. In addition to speakers, chants, and a card-cutting ceremony, the Coalition will also present the premier of its second show outside Macy’s (women’s) Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose in solidarity with Alia Atawneh and Hiam Yassine, as their cases continue. The broad Coalition is demanding that Macy’s/Federated Department Stores (FDS) do the following:
1) Rehire both Alia Atawneh and Hiam Yassine
2) Compensate them for lost wages and benefits
3) Apologize to them specifically, and the Arab-American community in general, and
4 Enforce diversity training at all FDS facilities.
