STRONG ROOTS (RAIZ FORTE)
THE LANDLESS WORKERS MOVEMENT (MST) IN BRAZIL
Brazil's Landless Workers' Movement (MST) is the largest social movement in Latin America with 1.5 million members. Founded by rural workers in 1985, the MST struggles for agrarian reform and a just distribution of land. In the past 15 years, the MST has won over 8 million acres of land for 300,000 families and built thousands of food production cooperatives and
schools.
"Raiz Forte" or "Strong Roots" is a 45-minute documentary about the MST produced by Global Exchange. In the film, the MST narrate the story of their struggle for social justice. Winner of Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival in August, 2001, "Strong Roots" shows how Brazil's rural workers organized the MST to change their reality and become a leader in the struggle against international capitalism.
A discussion will follow the video. For more information on the MST, contact Dawn of the Friends of the MST at (415) 255-
