In Song and Struggle The 3rd annual music, dance and spoken word celebration of International Women’s Day and 12 years of Berkeley Copwatch Speakers: Kate Rafael of Women in Black, Mesha Monge-Irizarry, mother of Idriss Stelley, and Marianne Potje from Acting in Solidarity with Afghan People Music by Shelley Doty X-tet, Gwen Avery, Maaleh Tar Afghan, Andrea Prichett, Green, Marca Cassity, Making Waves, Destiny Arts dance troupe, and spoken word artists. Food provided by Food Not Bombs. WHY: This event is a benefit for Berkeley Copwatch, an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that works to defend civil liberties and human rights. Copwatch’s activities include teaching “Know Your Rights” trainings, street observation of the police, documenting abuses of police power, advocating for just police policies, and helping to start other Copwatch organizations around the country.
