"Conflict of Interest" A New Report on the Logging of Burma’s Forests Please join us for a brown bag lunch presentation for the US launch of this new report When: Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, 1:00PM. Location: Global Exchange, 2017 Mission St, Suite 303, San Francisco (16th BART station.) "Conflict of Interest," an important new report by the UK-based environmental organization Global Witness, exposes the devastating logging of Burma's northern old-growth temperate rainforests by Chinese timber companies from neighboring Yunnan Province. The massive logging has irreparable environmental implications for Burma's entire watershed, the survival of the Kachin indigenous people, and the political relationship between the regimes of Burma and China. Edith Mirante, one of the only outsiders to have observed the recent deforestation on the remote Burma/China border, will give an overview of the report and the logging situation in Burma. Ms. Mirante is the director of Project Maje, a Burma human rights and environmental information project, and consultant to the Global Witness report. Event sponsored by Global Witness, Open Society Institute, Project Maje, Get Up, Stand Up Communications, and Burma Project. Please post this announcement and forward to others who might be interested. Thank you.
