PERFORMANCE AS JUSTICE Incorporating a blend of spoken word, hip hop, and performance art with concepts of social and political transformation, this workshop explores ways to create performances that make the personal political and take that to the streets. The goal is to deeply explore our individual and group oppressions, desires and thirst for liberation, forge that into art that challenges, provokes and awakens, then take that outward, both to the stage and to the streets. Come prepared to work, to think, to laugh, to engage in struggle. This workshop is open to all performance-based artists who are ready to work; e.g., spoken word, MCs, performance artists, actors, video performance mavens, and so forth. It is open to all peoples, and is intended to be a challenging yet safe space for women, LGBTI folks, and people of color. Please have spent some time working on the “isms,” and leave your predjudices at the door. This is serious! Unrepentant bigots, homophobes, sexists and the like can stay far, far away. About the instructor: spoken word artist/performer/MC/author solidad decosta is a mixed race queer woman of black latina maternal ancestry. equal parts street journalist, storyteller and 40ish crone–ta–be with leo moon credentials, her work encompasses the why and where of life outside the boxes in a label obsessed world, and the what, when, who and how of everything else. Her chapbooks “Orchids are Feral,” “Long Delays Expect,” “fierce” and her CD/chapbook set “Manifesto” are available at bookstores across the country.
