Robert Fenz (U.S., 1997–2003) Artist in Person Meditations on Revolution is a series of exquisitely filmed short films that explore the meaning of the world “revolution.” Revolution is seen as a political and artistic phenomenon, and a contemporary and historical one. Part I: Lonely Planet (1997, 12.5 mins, Silent) is structured as an improvisational homage to Cuba’s endurance and captures the serene rhythm of Havana’s street life. Part II: The Space in Between (1997, 8 mins, Silent) was filmed in Latin America’s largest shantytown, Rochina, a favela of Rio de Janeiro, and reveals the tension of its inhabitants. Everyday events shot in Mexico City, San Cristobal de las Casas, and New York City are featured in Part lll: Soledad (2001, 15 mins, Silent), intertwined with fragments of Mexican tradition and images of revolution. Part lV: Greenville, MS (2001, 29.5 mins, Silent) portrays the discipline required in preparing for a fight through repetitive shots of a boxer’s training process. Fenz’s newest section, Part V: Foreign City (work-in-progress, c. 35 mins), shot in New York, is a portrait of jazz artist Marion Brown.
