The day before the start of the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in SF, MindFreedom , Global Exchange, and others are co-sponsoring a free Alternative Mental Health Conference to discuss subjects such as forced psychiatric treatment, medicalization of human suffering, globalization of the pharmaceutical industry, youth & madness, and rights & discrimination in the mental health system. Guest speakers include Robert Whitaker, author of Mad in America; Celia Brown, leader of the first psychiatric survivor delegation at the UN; and Loren Mosher, M.D. creator of the famous Soteria Project-a successful non-medical alternative for persons experiencing acute psychosis.
