4 Activists Arrested At San Quentin Protesting To Save Kevin Cooper's Life
Four activists participating in one of a statewide series of demonstrations in support of condemned prisoner Kevin Cooper were arrested Tuesday for blocking the gates to San Quentin prison, where the convicted quadruple murderer is scheduled to die by lethal injection just after midnight next Tuesday.
Cooper's execution would be the first in California in two years and the 11th since the resumption of capital punishment in the state in 1978. As the day has drawn near, anti-death-penalty activists have held a series of street demonstrations and spoken-word events at campuses over the past few weeks.

The demonstration outside the prison, attended by 21 activists, was peaceful and led by longtime anti-death-penalty activists the Rev. Paul Sawyer of Pasadena, the Rev. Louis Vitale of San Francisco, and 1960s icon Wavy Gravy, who was dressed as Santa Claus.
