A year ago, the people of Argentina faced the Christmas season in a grim
economic state. The IMF refused the government's loan request, so workers
saw their salaries cut by 60%. Citibank and other major banks froze people's
bank accounts. Once the poster child of the IMF and World Bank, Argentina
found the end of the neoliberal economic rainbow: complete financial ruin.
Facing hunger and renewed police repression, over a million people
spontaneously took to the streets on Dec 19-20. They banged on pots and pans
and chanted "Que Se Vayan Todos!" (They all must go) to transnational
corporations, corrupt politicians, and the repressive police forces that
support them.
(popular public assemblies) to make their own economic decisions and
continue the Cacerolazos to make their voices heard. An inspiring movement
has developed where the popular politics of the future are being
re-invented. The people of Argentina are calling for a global day of action
to mark their anniversary.
