Election time is here again, prompting the question “If every candidate is required to have bucket loads of corporate and PAC money to compete, does it really matter which of their stooges I vote for?” “Democracy” becomes ever more illusory as the electoral system enables these corporate representatives to make decisions that deeply affect our lives. What are the consequences? Enron, corporate fraud, and the plundering of our natural resources, to name a few. What’s being sacrificed? Our health, our ecosystems, our future generations and our civil rights. Come join Robert Perez from the California League of Conservation Voters and Gary Krane, Director of the Fair Elections Speakers Bureau as they discuss The Reform That Makes All Others Possible: Publicly Funded Elections. We’ll show a short Bill Moyers video that explains how the public financing model is already working well in Maine and Arizona, enabling ordinary citizens -- citizens who want to court voters and not donors -- to run competitive races and win office. You will also learn how the movement is developing here in California, as well as almost 40 other states, and what you can do to help. Time: 7 pm - 9 pm. Cost: Free.
