Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) follows the story of the Cuban musical group of the same name. It consisted of a musical group to come out of the wake of the Cuban revolution. A combination of doo-wop, Calypso, boss nova, and African rhythms, they developed a sound much like US soul groups in the 60s. Returning to Cuba for the first time in 13 years, Miguel Cancio reunites with the only other surviving member of the group, Manuel Galban. The ensuing trip reveals the still legendary status they have in their home neighborhood of Cayo Hueso, and the tragic lives and early deaths of the 3 other members.
