SFSU UNROLLS NEW PROGRAM FOR BAY AREA BOOMERS
Open House Features SF Chronicle’s Jon Carroll’s Reflections on Aging

January 12, 2004 (San Francisco) – How does one age in the San Francisco Bay Area? Ungracefully, fearlessly, and with gusto for one’s second coming of age, according to those who will be teaching in San Francisco State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, offered by SFSU’s own College of Extended Learning. A panoply of classes ranging from what the future of San Francisco holds for an older population to a program for revitalizing one’s mid-century digestive process run February through April 2004 at the SFSU Downtown Center, 425 Market at Fremont.

Directed by filmmaker Susan Hoffman, the classes are designed to help people traditionally considered “over the hill” to develop productive, creative, and engaging ways to participate in the arts, the community, the world and – most importantly, with each other. Classes offer field trips, forums, and hands-on participation in art, photography, memoir writing, community activity, and public speaking. The program’s teachers are leading professionals in their fields, artists, civic leaders, and change makers in the Bay Area.

Come learn more about the program and meet some of the teachers at the Open House, Thursday, February 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the SFSU Downtown Center, 425 Market Street, just half a block west of the Embarcadero BART. Jon Carroll, San Francisco Chronicle’s columnist, who writes about his fondness for felines and his growing weltschmerz, will share his plans for growing older in the Bay Area.

OLLI-SFSU’s program features the work of its award-winning artists in residence, photographer Marcia Lieberman and writer Cyra Mc Fadden.

RSVP for the Open House to (415) 405-7799. For a brochure on the program call Robert Martin at 415-405-7711 or visit http://www.cel.sfsu.edu.olli.
