College outreach imperiled : Budget ax may hit programs helping disadvantaged students

by repost
Midyear cuts already have chopped millions of dollars from the outreach programs, and additional cuts set for next year would eliminate them altogether. That would leave about 750,000 students statewide without the extra academic help and counseling they need to navigate the path to college
The elimination of outreach funding is one of many steps proposed to deal with the state's multibillion dollar budget crisis. Proposed cuts in higher education total $372 million for UC and $240 million for CSU, including slashes in outreach funding.
