Critical Mass in Modesto Forming!

by Doug (wewillburyyou [at] ziplip.com)
The DAAA Collective (Direct Action Anti-Authoritarians) is launching a new sub-collective: Critical Mass! Beneath this concrete a beach - will you join us in a swim?
CRITICAL MASS IN MODESTO FORMS:

Critical Mass is a worldwide movement of bicyclists that take to the streets to realize that they aren’t blocking traffic, they are traffic! Instead of a smog filled unsustainable world of gas guzzling SUV’s, we would like to see sustainable energy and transportation. Come and ride with your friends (some bikes will be provided), and come see what happens when autonomy hits the streets!

Critical Mass was created to promote alternative forms of transportation and foster a better and more connected community. Critical Mass is designed so riders can be a part of the flow of traffic, but obey streets signs, and leave lanes open for car traffic. This is an all family event, and we will stay safe, ride together, and HAVE FUN!

Instead of smog, a sky! Beneath this concrete a beach, join us in a swim!

CRITICAL MASS MODESTO POINTS OF PURPOSE:

1.) To promote alternative forms of transportation and energy. We see the current use of fossil fuels as not only costly and environmentally destructive, but also not sustainable for future generations. Critical Mass works to advocate non-destructive forms of energy.

2.) Celebrate autonomous group organization, and participation. Modern society is constructed under hierarchal structures based around capital, the state, and patriarchy. Critical Mass works as an autonomous system, where all involved are in charge of directing and managing the desired outcome of the social situation.

3.) Reclaiming public space. Private property brings the worth of most things down to that of only it’s worth in connection with profit. Through actively using space in a way that liberates our desires, we connect with that in which we as a class produce.

4.) Act in solidarity with other groups seeking change. Critical Mass sees itself not as the solution to the entire problems facing our world, but as part of a larger movement against authoritarianism, hierarchy, and empire on a global scale. We seek to give attention to various problems through our actions, and also act in solidarity when we can with other groups.

Action!: When: Friday, February 27th, 5pm. Where: Gather outside of Brendan Theaters and the 10th St. Place. We will gather again at Tower Park, 17th and G St. after the ride, where Food Not Bombs will feed a special meal. Crical Mass will ride the last Friday of every month thereafter (Feb 27th).

That's kind of like asking Democrats what they think of the work done for social change by "radicals", and you'd probably get the same kind of answer that the bike establishment gives about CM

We were handing out flyers the other day, and a woman on a bike stopped by us and we gave her one. She looked at it and said, "This is great! Those people in SUV's with their cell phones are always running us over! I'm putting this up at work!"

She seemed to think it wasn't so criminal.

It is amusing to me that the goal of critical mass meetings, such as this attempt in Modesto, is to make people aware of cyclists and to encourage people to park SUV's and commute via alterantive transportation - ie the bicycle.
What actually happens is that people arrive into town in their SUV with the bike racks on the back, park in an off site location then ride over and protest the swarming of the roads by the SUV type of vehicles. They then ride their bikes back to the parking lot and drive home in the SUV with the heater full blast. Americans have a love affair with their vehicles and a critical mass type of "rally" will infuriate the drivers that are trying to go "Somewhere" in a "hurry", and then have them go after the people riding their bikes with the country red neck attitude of "look their goes one of those liberals in tight lycra suits. 10 points for knocking him/her off."
Spend the time, well placed effort, and $$$ educating people, so the car manufacturers and city councilmen have greater awarness of the benefits of mass transit and local communiting bicycling lanes. Due to todays power hungry society and ease of use infrastructure to lure big business attitudes, the above will never happen. The general American attitude is "bigger is better". However, europeans are brought up on mass transit, small fast cars, bicycles and exercise (walking and running). Just a few thoughts early in the AM of this very rainy day.

Dougie D. is that you?????

Haven't heard about you since Punkunderground was deformed, destroyed or whatever it's been gone. What happened. I hear Renic has been too busy with the kids. Looks like you graduated from FNB to CM. I've dealt with that a lot in the Bay Area also. They tried to storm out on Highway 80 once but CHP intelligence had heard about it and they were waiting for them at the access point. Packed em all on a bus and sent them to Santa Rita (County Resort for anarchists).
