Michael Parenti to Speak At a Press Conference Against the Sleeping Ban in Santa Cruz

by Becky Johnson (repost sc-imc) (becky_johnson [at] sbcglobal.net)
Michael Parenti will be speaking at a press conference against the Sleeping Ban in Santa Cruz (MC 6.36.010 a & b) on Tuesday, January 13, at 3:30PM outside Mayor Scott Kennedy's City Council meeting at Santa Cruz City Hall. Micky Z., Yves Engler and many other people will be a the press conference. A statement by Cynthia McKinney will also be read (McKinney will have already left town after her presentation on Monday night).

While we all feel a national unity to throw Bush out of office, how we act locally tells us more about ourselves than any other cause we might work on.

With record homeless levels in Santa Cruz County -- 11,898 people homeless at some point in 2003, up from 8,550 in 2000, and 46 homeless deaths in 2003, it is immoral to force people who are not in legal shelters to stay awake all night or refrain from using a blanket! Sleep is not a crime! City Council is only 4 votes away from ending the Sleeping Ban. Mayor Kennedy (a supporter of the Sleeping Ban) needs to wake up and fix this human rights abuse under his very nose.

To have bums living in the business districts of this city IS NOT AN OPTION! it is long past time that we end the vagrancy problem that has infested this city and it's streets!

I for one would like some PROOF of the numbers you are claiming. the homeless service providers are notorious for
(creatively expanding their head counts.....to say the least)
and the numbers you quote are preposterous!

do you really think the public is so stupid that they will believe this tripe?
