CODEPINK Joins V-Day in a March on Ciudad Juárez
Since 1993, more than 320 women have been murdered in Ciudad Juárez, the sister city of El Paso, Texas. Of these deaths, approximately 100 have been sexual-torture killings of young women, ages 12 – 19. Some 450 more women are unaccounted for or missing.

Unbelievably, nobody is taking responsibility for solving the cases. The police are in cahoots with the public prosecutor's office while outdated laws and powerful drug cartels have allowed the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to go free. Publicly, victims are blamed for dressing provocatively or for being out too late.

Some 60% of the victims are factory workers, yet US-owned maquiladora factory managers deny any responsibility for the security of their female employees. Despite these ongoing horrible killings, the maquila association sued the city to avoid paying for streetlamps and security cameras around job sites. A local judge, citing Chapter 11 provisions in NAFTA, agreed. According to the judge's order, factories are not liable for security expenses, so there are no lights, no cameras and no action being taken to help support female workers' security.

On Valentine's Day weekend, CodePink will join with V-Day, the global movement to stop violence against women and girls started by Eve Ensler of the Vagina Monologues, in a huge, international demonstration in Ciudad Juárez. V-Day has organized an awareness concert the night of February 13, and on February 14th there will be a march to take back the streets and make them safe for women. CodePink will be there in solidarity with the women of Juárez, V-day, and women around the world.

We know it's a long haul, but we hope to have a strong Bay Area contingent. What better way to spend Valentine's Day than to stand with your sisters, showing love and support for those who are being brutally murdered?

If you can't make it to Juárez, we’ll have more information soon on ways you can support the efforts of those who are going. We'll also have more specific information about the planned events as it becomes available. At our Bay Area meeting, we'll explore what we can do here locally on the day of the V-Day march in solidarity.
