13 schools in Oakland face the ax

by repost
OAKLAND -- The Oakland school district has finished making a list of 13 campuses that may be closed next year for both financial and educational reasons.
A month ago, state school Administrator Randolph Ward announced declining enrollment, vacant classrooms and budget shortfalls would force the closure of an estimated 5 to 10 campuses next year.

Just as the neighborhoods are plagued with problems, so are the schools. The issues seem overwhelming, but the old problems, the poverty, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and the high dropout rate, are fading into the shadow of the financial crisis and the state takeover. If ever there was a time to pay attention to Oakland's schools, youth and streets, it is now.

§Proposed Oakland School Closures Upset Parents
by link to story
The Oakland Board of Education and parents are concerned about a plan by the schools chief to close about a dozen schools in the district in a cost-cutting move.
...
Wandra Boyd is not happy about that. "I have three kids, two at Skyline High School and one at one of the schools they'll be closing, Howard Elementary," Boyd said. "She's autistic and in one of their special day classes."
