Activists went Eco-Caroling at MAXXAM today: See story and pictures
SACRED carolers spread holiday cheer through Earth-friendly hymns.
In an effort to spread good cheer and consciousness this holiday season, SACRED went eco-caroling at MAXXAM today.
MAXXAM Corporation is responsible for the careless logging of our nation's ancient California redwood forests. SACRED wants to spread the message that America's old-growth redwood forests are in danger of extinction, and that MAXXAM implements destructive logging practices on the large track of unprotected old-growth land they own. These destructive logging practices have placed several species of fish and birds on the endangered species list and continue to threaten the livelihood of citizens in Humboldt County, California.
Five activists spent their morning gathered in the spirit of the forest to commemorate the lives already lost and to prepare for the mass destruction MAXXAM plans to implement as of January 1, 2004. Freshwater's only pristine, in-tact region is set to be demolished by spring 2004, as MAXXAM can legally clear-cut 500-600 acres in Freshwater per year.

I THINK THAT I SHALL NEVER SEE, A POEM LOVELY AS A TREE,
A TREE WHOSE HUNGRY MOUTH IS PRESSED,
AGAINST THE EARTH'S SWEET FLOWING BREAST.
A TREE THAT LOOKS AT GAIA ALL DAY,
AND LIFTS HER LEAFY ARMS TO PRAY,
A TREE THAT MAY IN SUMMER WEAR;
A NEST OF MURRELETS IN HER HAIR;
UPON WHOSE BOSOM SNOW HAS LAIN,
WHO INTIMATELY LIVES WITH RAIN,
TREES ARE CUT BY FOOLS LIKE ME,
BUT ONLY GAIA CAN MAKE A TREE.

"Just to be clear, this is not "legal" logging. The basis for the 500 acres per year in Freshwater (and the 600 per year in Elk River) comes from the "fatally flawed" Sustained Yield Plan, that was set aside by Judge Golden. Despite this, the logging continues. "

Layers in the Forest
(sung to "If You're Happy and You Know It")
There are layers in the forest, yes indeed, yes indeed
There are layers in the forest, yes indeed, yes indeed
Emergent, canopy and the understory
There are layers in the forest, yes indeed, yes indeed
MAXXAM is chopping all the old-growth trees, old-growth trees
MAXXAM is chopping all the old-growth trees, old-growth trees
Forest into desert is MAXXAM’s greatest pleasure
MAXXAM is chopping all the old-growth trees, old-growth trees
Old-growth is home to marbled murrelets, murrelets
Old-growth is home to marbled murrelets, murrelets
They come back to nest to find their homes a mess
Old-growth is home to marbled murrelets, murrelets
MAXXAM is logging on steep slopes, steep slopes
MAXXAM is logging on steep slopes, steep slopes
Erosion chokes the streams and the salmon can not
breathe
MAXXAM is logging on steep slopes, steep slopes
Activists are sitting in the trees, in the trees
Activists are sitting in the trees, in the trees
They’re pulled down from their perch and sued for trespassing
Activists are sitting in the trees, in the trees
[Repeat first verse]

God Rest ye Merry Lumberman
God rest ye merry lumberman
Let nothing to dismay
Remember Charlie Hurwitz, his bills he has to pay
So watch him take your Redwood trees and pension funds away
No tidings, no comfort and no joy,
No comfort no joy.
No tidings, no comfort and no joy

MAXXAM Adapted from Judi Bari's LP
(Am) Cutting down the forest
Hauling it away
(G) Rumble of your lumber trucks
(D) At the break of day
(Am) Last of the baby redwoods
Hit that forest floor
(G) Run ‘em through your chipper
To (D) make that waferboard
MAXXAM
Two (F) hundred thousand (G) acres without (Am) stopping
(F) Forest to a (G) desert in a (Am) day
(F) Modern forest-(G)ry is so (Am) amazing
Let (F) the future generations (E) pay
MAXXAM
Haul it to the sawmill
Gotta make a buck
Your blades are worn and dangerous
Better trust your luck
Don’t stop for the workers safety
Never fear the worst
‘Cause if somebody kills themself
Just blame it on Earth First!
MAXXAM
When the trees are gone just close the mill down
Pack up your machines and move away
Never mind the lives your devastating
Cut and run’s the only game you play
MAXXAM
Barren ruined hillsides
Are all you leave behind
Before the land can heal itself
You cut a second time
Logging to infinity
Watch your profits grow
With our forests and our future
On a barge to Mexico
