Bernie Ward-The Wimp of The Left

by ken morgan (generalstrike2000 [at] yahoo.com)
Hey, Hey Bernie Ward, how many poor have you killed today.
San Francisco "liberal" radio talk show (KGO AM 810) host Bernie Ward spent most of his program, Tuesday evening, in the aftermath of the San Francisco run off elections for Mayor and District Attorney, engaging in an emotional and irrational tirade of lies and slanders, against unsucessful Mayoral Green Party candidate Matt Gonzalez, as well as against Gonzalez supporters. Ward was a supporter of the victor, conservative Democrat Gavin Newsome, who ran a campaign based on scapegoating the poor and the homeless.
While Ward correctly noted that Gonzalez had the backing of a couple of wealthy supporters, he conveniently overlooked the countless wealthy supporters of the Newsome campaign. Ward omitted the fact that in the General election and the Runoff election, that Newsome outspent Gonzalez by a ratio of 10-1. In both elections Newsome paid over $34 per vote.
As Ward raved on, his real agenda became apparent. Ward supports the electoral disenfranchisement of anyone to the left of that "graveyard of social movements", the Democratic Party. Ward has the utmost hatred and contempt of anyone in any electoral campaign who advocates a society, where workers have the right to organize into unions (near impossible with the anti-labor laws in this country), and where no one is involuntarily homeless or unemployed, and receives decent pay for their labor. This is why Ward has spent the past 3 years attacking the only candidate in the 2000 Presidential election who ran such a campaign-Ralph Nader.
As to Ward's claim of significant differences between the Democrats and Republicans, I can refute that with two words: "Welfare Reform". Ward is silent on the fact that of the 500,000 Iraqi children killed as the result of US sanctions, 80% of those deaths occurred during the administration of President Bill Clinton, a Democrat ("it's worth it"-former Clinton Secretary of State Madeline Albright). This doesn't seem to faze those of the ghoulish ilk of Bernie Ward.
To be an advocate of worker and human rights, and a supporter of either the Democratic or Republican parties is a hopeless contradiction.

Bernie Ward is one confused person. He fails to see the many contradictions within himself and his own statements.

As to Ward's claim of "significant differences between the Democrats and Republicans," Ward and others refuse to acknowledge that we now have a one-party system in Washington. There would be differences between the so-called Democrats and the Republicans IF and ONLY IF the Dead Democratic Party would adhere to what they once stood for and stand for something.

Ward himself has said that the Democratic Party doesn't appear to stand for anything or have any meaning any longer, then out of the other side of his mouth he talks about there are differences between these two parties.

One night Ward said,."No, the Democrats haven't failed us." Then the very next night he asked, "Where are the Democrats?"

Have you had too many donuts, Bernie? You wouldn't be asking where are the Democrats if they had not failed us. DUH!

I stopped listening to Ward during the mayoral runoff because it was like listening to an out-of-control redneck.

I don't need that. There are enough rabid rednecks on the airwaves today without listening to Ward.

While I'm not surprised to hear such pro-Newsom drivel emanating from KGO, I am surprised to hear it from Bernie Ward. I stopped listening to KGO just prior to the runoff after they ran a blatantly misleading ad vitriolic editorial against Matt Gonzalez. It just confirmed my suspicions that KGO is becoming yet another dumbed-down talk radio stations that caters to the political elite. The ClearChannel stations just happen to cater to the Republican elite while KGO caters to the Democratic elite.

As for Bernie Ward, I wonder how his Catholic values allow him to support an egocentric thug who scapegoats and mistreats the poor? As I've read it, Jesus' whole life was dedicating to actually helping these people. Would Jesus take away their money? Would Jesus try to criminalize their behavior in the hope of driving them out of town? I'm not a Christian, but I somehow doubt Jesus would approve. I don't mind well-intentioned criticism of Matt Gonzalez, but this type of vitriol (especially when it flies square in the face of reality) only undermines Mr. Ward.

Maybe some of you with computers at home, could send this article and comments to him during his show. He was out, sick last night, so he may not be back until next week-Ken M

Actually, my complaint against Bernie Ward is that his show is too frequently repetitive and lacks any interchange of ideas. One show is very much like the next, content is very narrow and predictable, he resorts to long monologues, and he seems afraid to engage with those who disagree, except with his callers who unfortunately add little to the show. While I definitely lean towards the Republican side of things, I love debate and I love to listen and learn from the more liberal mindset. If Bernie invited in guests who disagreed with him - either from the left or right - I would love to listen. The calls he gets from his listeners just don't do it for me. Very few of them can articulate and defend their positions well, the calls are very short, and they degenerate into a "let's see who can win here". Perhaps successful talk radio (which is about ratings and not content) requires this kind of shallowness and black and white view of the world. Rush Limbaugh certainly is no better. But it is a shame to love talk radio, yet be frequently disappointed in its delivery
