SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Matt Gonzalez, accompanied by a throng of enthusiastic supporters, visited Fillmore Street in the Western Addition to remind citizens to vote in this Tuesday’s run-off election and to call attention to his affordable housing platform.
The rally was the last in a series of citywide campaign events today set up to rally San Francisco voters. Other stops included Bayview, the Sunset and a rally at the Civic Center.
After a kick-off speech by actor and Bay Area native Danny Glover earlier in the day, Gonzalez attended a community-sponsored forum at the St. Francis Square Apartments at Geary and Divisadero.
Glover, a former resident of the Western Addition, said that he was proud to support Matt Gonzalez for mayor: "I support Matt Gonzalez because of his effective leadership in supporting Proposition L, the minimum wage increase, Proposition H, police reform and accountability, and Public Power. Gonzalez's progressive values make him the only acceptable choice for the next mayor of San Francisco."
The St. Francis Square location highlighted Gonzalez’s stance on affordable housing in San Francisco. The housing complex is the result of an innovative partnership between the City and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).
In exchange for subsidized land and construction costs through San Francisco’s Redevelopment Agency, the ILWU provides long-term mortgage financing to lower income residents of the Western Addition.
Gonzalez has touted St. Francis Square as a model for creating homeownership opportunities and affordable housing in San Francisco, a city where real estate prices are among the highest in the nation.
