Labor Conference

Working People, The War and Repression
&
What We Can Do About It

Saturday December 6, 2003 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

ILWU Local 10 Henry Schmidt Rm. 2nd Fl.
400 North Point St./Mason St.
San Francisco, California

The growing attacks on our democratic rights are a danger to all working people and every trade union in the country. The police state tactics in Miami against anti-FTAA protesters who included thousands of trade unionists is a continuation of the government's assault on our right to freedom of speech. It follows the violent attack on April 7, 2003 in Oakland at the Port against anti-war protesters and ILWU Local 10 longshoremen. who were standing by. These attacks are also taking place internationally. At a protest in Rotterdam, thousands of police attacked longshoremen from throughout Europe and a delegation of ILWU supporters. These longshoremen were marching against deregulation and the introduction of temporary workers. The threat last year by Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge against the ILWU during the contract negotiations and the use of the union busting Taft-Hartley is a also a clear sign that labor is under the gun.
It is clear that the attacks on organized labor are also directly connected to the US war on Iraq. From Japan and Korea to Spain and the UK, the war against terrorism and the war on Iraq is being used to weaken and eliminate all our democratic rights.
It is critical that labor begin to discuss and debate how it can defend itself under the present circumstances. Please join us at this important conference.
