Canadian Anti-Expressway Protest Needs Help

by Elaine Marion (macinnem [at] muss.cis..mcmaster.ca)
Since August 5 a group of natives and non-natives have held off a construction crew from cutting down the trees in the last large green space in our city. This week could be the final stand for us unless we get a lot of international attention.
This past week has been an emotional time for the tree defenders of the Red Hill Valley. There have been 11 arrests on Thursday and next week the police and the hired security for the city of Hamilton have threatened to come in and "clear" out the Longhouse that natives built in the Valley during the summer resistance.
Natives have also built a roundhouse close by that houses the sacred fire burning to honour their ancestors and to bring together the conflicting parties for discussion. The city politiciams have instead pushed the police to enact an injunction and arrest all pickets and tree defenders who had successfully saved the tress until this week.
During the months of resistance a strong bond has grown between the people at the Longhouse and between the natives and the non-natives. This has given those natives a feeling of wonder at what good can be achieved if we work together and respect the aims of various interests. These people represent matives interested in hunting and fishing rights enshrined in treaty, environmentalists concerned about air quality affected by the cutting of 47,000 trees and the resulting traffic from an eight kilometre stretch of expressway, and animal activists concerned about the loss of habitat for a colony of southern flying squirrels amd many migratory birds. These people have joined hands at pickets, at the sacred fire and when they stood waiting for arrest.
We have lost access to the trees where we had chained ourselves. One protector nailed his hand to a tree as chains were being cut. Our tree sitter was starved out after three days and weak and disoriented was arrested when he came dowm. We need help this week or the police will take the Longhouse. We need body harnesses, ropes, wood board for platforms, people (many people frightened away by local media co-opted by city government), publicity in the outside, international media. We are running out of time.
If you are a native reading this know that a clan mother was among the brave people arrested this week in Hamilton. She came to be arrested with her good friend who has been a agent of peace and reconciliation throughtout this resistance.
My name is Elaine Marion and I run an animal activist group in Hamilton. Some of our people have been involved in the Red Hill Valley Resistance since August 5 and many people have put their lives aside to help. Can you help us?
