Showtime at the Berkeley Bowl: Last chances to encourage workers before election
info about berkeley bowl union election
After 4 months of struggling to unionize the Berkeley Bowl, workers have been faced with an onslaught of anti-union flyers from management and a few brown nosing employees. The owners of the Berkeley Bowl hired a Human Resources person last month, and she has been leading the charge against the union. Their have mainly been strange rumors started by management about layoffs and not being able to call in sick anymore if we vote for the union.
It would be very helpful over these last couple of days before the election if people could go shopping at the store and encourage workers as much as possible, without interfering too much with their work. If you see workers on break, in the cafe or outside, don't hesitate to engage them. Any encouragement at this point will really help, and most people can see through management's tactics of intimidation and lies, so it's almost a matter of talking to the employees to ease their fears and let them know the community supports them.
We could especially use help communicating to folks in the deli, meat, seafood, and produce; and folks who speak cantonese or spanish would be especially helpful.

ps - the union election is on Thursday, so if you want to come down as the votes are counted...they should be counted at the store sometime right after 4:15pm

I was at the rally tonight (Monday) and I thought it was great! Hearing Dolores Huerta, Judy Goff, Linda Maio, Kriss Worthington, and other community leaders was very good. The workers there at the Berkeley Bowl are wonderful and they DESERVE rights and voice, and the fact that the owners are trying to hard to keep them from having their rights really pisses me off. We need to stand behind the employees and show them support. I'll wear my button everyday this week when I go into the store, I hope others do as well.

that will be a monumental statement, especially while you are in line at Costco.
same spoiled american attitude, power to the people
but I want to shop at the mega discount store. when you force the bowl out of buisness and it's employees are jobless I hope you feel proud.

Yo, as a former employee of Fresh Organics / 24th St. in San Francisco, I know what y'all are going through. Our union campaign had hardly gotten off the ground before company executives made the decision to close the store under the pretense of remodeling / completing an exhaustive renovation. But the neighborhood is behind us, and we've got claims pending at the NLRB, and there's a neighborhood farmer's market slated to open on 11/22 ( the neighborhood wants to demonstrate that they're willing and able to take action ), and we have hopes that this company, should they choose to stay in town, will eventually be forced to come to grips with the labor issues they've thus far hoped to evade. It ain't over til it's over....
