MASS PROTESTS AGAINST THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ PLANNED FOR SATURDAY, OCT. 25
RALLIES IN SAN FRANCISCO, WASHINGTON, DC EXPECTED TO DRAW THOUSANDS
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 25, 11 AM meet at Civic Center,
Noon March to Jefferson Square Park for 1 PM rally
WHERE: Protest begins at Civic Center, San Francisco Noon march to Jefferson Square Park (Turk and Laguna Streets)
WHAT: California's major anti-war coalitions have joined together to organize what is expected to be the largest protest against the occupation of Iraq since the U.S. attacked Iraq in March 2003. More than 2,000 organizations and individuals have endorsed the march and rally, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 in San Francisco. Protesters will gather at 11 AM at Civic Center and march at Noon to Jefferson Square Park (Turk and Laguna Streets) for a 1 PM rally. Speakers will include former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney; Ron Kovic, Vietnam War veteran and author of Born on the Fourth of July; and Fernando Suarez Del Solar, father of a Marine who was killed in Iraq.
The protest will reflect the growing opposition to the Bush Administration's disastrous occupation of Iraq, which has already cost the lives of more than 7,200 innocent Iraqis (http://www.iraqbodycount.net) and 325 U.S. soldiers. Meanwhile, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and the occupation is costing U.S. taxpayers close to $4 billion per month.
The sponsors of the Oct. 25 march and rally include International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), Bay Area United Against War, Not In Our Name, United for Peace and Justice, and the Vanguard Alliance. These are the groups that sponsored the massive Feb. 16 San Francisco anti-war protest. Organizers expect a large turnout, as buses are already scheduled to bring participants from Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, Seattle, Reno, and elsewhere.
The theme of the march and rally is "End the Occupation, Bring the Troops Home Now."

Anarchists, are you interested in a long term organizing effort against capitalist wars and the military -industrial complex. Anti-Militarist Anarchists is a new group that has formed to create a living alternative and permanent anarchist organization against the capitalist war machines. We hold weekly meeting, next meeting is Monday, Oct. 20th at 7:00pm at the 16th Street Bart Station Plaza in the Mission. We seek to go simply beyond, but inclusive of, protest marches, black blocs and street demonstrations.

Well, first of all, a caveat on this poll. It was conducted by Opinion Dynamics for Fox News, neither of which are exactly impartial sources (they're both basically house organs for the Republican Party). OD polls always tend to lean more right than the more respected Gallup or Time/CNN polls.
Anyway, that said, let's look at what this poll actually says. First, it shows support for the war is continually slipping and is now at its lowest level and heading lower. Every month, the number who support the war decreases and the number who oppose it increases. Currently, only 39% polled strongly agree with the statement that "going to war with Iraq was the right thing to do."
Of course there are always die-hard republicans who will support the war no matter how bad it goes, but what the numbers indicate are that more and more Americans are realizing this war is a bad idea. Many of those who still support the war, do so out of ignorance. For instance, other polls have shown a majority of Americans believe WMDs have been found (they haven't) or that most of the hijackers were from Iraq and Afghanistan (in fact, none were)
The problem with relying on the ignorance of the public is that once they learn the facts, you lose their support. That seems to be happening now.

"Can't you just accept defeat and move on? The same 500 people who go to all these things should find another hobby, as this has become tiresome."
Cut these protestors some slack. Even losers have a social need to congregate and feel important, even if only a few times a year. Maybe it will get some of them to leave their dark apartments and enjoy the light of day.

I am sorry but, in case you have not noticed, we are “anti-imperialist”. We believe in an economic and social system that is run for the people and by the people not the government and an elite few that are in big business.
That is where we draw the line. We will never find an agreement. We are not willing to negotiate. We don’t want to compromise our democracy. It is all or all. We will not agree with Fascism there for it has no voice or place on our website.

You see, nobody on IMC cared when women were raped with broken bottles by Iraqi police. Nobody here cared when people were tortured to death by Iraqi military.
And, nobody here cared when the voice of millions were quashed by the dictatorships of Iraq and Syria.
BUT NOW, they can complain about the conditions without fear of death. That condition is INTOLERABLE to the IMC set, especially if Americans are the ones who gave them that freedom.
May I come to your house and rape you, dissect your insides, and set you on fire? You can be a proper liberal.

"anything posted here which challenges the Palestians, homosexual activists, or the anti-bush camp is labeled racist, homophobic, or fascist, respectively, and deleted by the editors."
These posts do nothing to enrich the principles on what we are as a living democracy. We must connect with each other in debate that mixes facts, beliefs, and emotion. Treat one another with a little respect and dignity and we can at least begin to understand where we agree to disagree.
Let's communicate a little more objectively and try to understand our opinions and beliefs as a whole rather than one against the other.

Jason,
I share your hope for dialogue, but that is not the goal of this IMC. Hang around long enough and you will see that any thoughts outside the party line are not tolerated herein.
I don't even see the post from which you quoted out here anywhere.

I take exception to the claim that the IMC did not cover the Saddam Hussein regime critically, it was CNN that purposefully covered up regime cruelty. I personally wrote a global feature highlighting the resistance of Iraqis to the regime and the gross human rights violations of the Baath regime against it's citizens, carried out by CIA trained thugs.

To "you're hilarious" -
I can tell by your statement that when it comes to understanding the CIA's role in World Politics, you are illiterate. Read. Investigate. You might be surprised what you learn. As we speak, the CIA is busy trying to remove Venezuela's democratically elected president, Hugo Chavez, from power. In fact, he recently cancelled a trip to New York because he got word from his own intelligence operatives that the CIA had planned to bring down his plane. And read history. The CIA has helped to bring down MANY world leaders - many who were democratically elected. I encourage you to read about the post WWII history of Iraq, Iran, Chile, and Central America. And turn off your TV. It's all propaganda. BTW - I'm an ex-Republican and ex-Bush supporter.

I'm glad we have YOU guys, to 'tell the truth' in news reporting today. I caught a real short story account of the rally in SF today on a local 'Clear Channel' radio station here in SD, today. I was wondering how they would 'spin' the story and make those portesting seem like a bunch of 'hippy, drug abusers' and sure enough. I was particularly interested how they would report the attendance at the protest and whether they would deliberately reduce the attendance number, so as to give the appearance that the protest was only that of a small minority; and they did, with estimates of no more than 1300 people attending. Quite a drop from the 'real' attendance number, 30,000
Once again, thanks for being here to 'tell us the truth'
