The Julia Butterfly Show

by The Shim Sham Maam (shimshammaam [at] yahoo.com)
Julia Butterfly & the "We The Planet" tour
If your a blissed-out hippie looking for easy answers then the "We The Planet" tour is for you. Serious environmentalists, on the other hand, might want to pass if they don't want to gag on the sappy sweet patronizing of Julia "Butterfly" Hill.
Sporting a huge crystal butterfly pendant, Ms. Hill takes to the stage with all the charm of a faith healer while offering a message that's little better - and not without asking for donations. Still living off the fame her ill-fate tree-sit has afforded her, Julia knows what her adoring fans want to hear and she does not fail to deliver her message of green consumerism.
On the table outside of the auditorium where she speaks is all of her merchandise on sale; books, clothing, a video or two, water bottles, coffee cups, etc. Further outside is her tour bus which, even if powered by vegetable oil, is still an unsustainable creation that was undoubtedly manufactured by means of toxic processes. If everyone bought her junk and and traveled around in a tour bus they would very likely be living unsustainable lives. If everyone used vegetable for fuel we'd probably need to double the amount of farmland and soil erosion would be an even greater problem. And this green consumerism is what she's offering up as a ideal! She doesn't seem to understand the nature of consumerism. Asking consumers to consume less is like asking an alcoholic to only drink a little. Does she really recognize the gravity of biocide that is resulting from mass consumer culture? If she does why doesn't she use her media attention to ask for more than the minimum effort?
This isn't to say that her position is entirely misguided, but these days she doesn't even invoke the spirit of Gandhi - and she certainly hasn't' evolved past his oversimplified idealism. In fact, she seems to have regressed back to the showy evangelical religosity of her youth. She also seems to have forgotten about her life-changing car accident as she travels around the country in that hulking bus. How would she feel if it hit someone?
I mean really, am I the only one who has noticed these things and am I entirely out of line for pointing them out and asking questions?

Isn't any one going to touch this? I mean.... Or is she totally off limits?

Butterfly
has lost her way, and is not representing the needs of the earth. she has given in to greed and corruption of the city, and is prostituting her self to the consuming masses. she must be cast out of the forest.

thanks for the inane critique. it seems that us cia death squads and military massacres abound these days, but of course the most upsetting thing is that butterfly sells coffee mugs. with hundreds of billions of dollars being spent on the brave new orwellian order, I definitly expect more COINTELPRO crap on IMC, as well as inane critiques of prominent activists by mediocre minds perhaps jealous that they will never amount to much.

I am The Lorax ,
Ispeak for the trees, and the forest and I say that
Butterfly has sold her spirit for a few gold coins and with it she sold our hopes of perserving the wonderful forest. the trees are now quiet. the forest doesnot speak it is just waiting for the end.

I'm not saying that Ms. Hill is the worst or cause of all our problems in the world. I'm just saying that her message is tame (if not counterproductive "green consumerism") and it's a shame that SHE is propped up as the best the environmentalist movement has to offer. In any case, there doesn't really need to be a national tour on a bus - there needs to be more action locally to fight the ignorance and corruption that is associated with the consumption of all that is wild and free. Maybe the hyperlink will help clarify my position.

she has sold out to the money grubbing city dwellers she is one of them now. butterfly no longer deserves to be associated with the cause!

Julia Rocks, and so does the We the Planet tour!
Jealousy is so ugly, folks...you should really just get out there and start doing stuff yourself, instead of sitting back and talking s*#t about the real revolutionaries of our time.
Does it have anything to do with the fact that she's feminine? Just can't stand to see the goddess rising, can you? Too bad, it's happening, and there's nothing you can do to stop it:)
You can't even fully comprehend the revolution, much less stop it! Ha!
Julia works endlessly, and takes very little for herself, giving it all back to the revolution, building bridges, and connecting with people in a way that many people jealously wish that they could.
You can save your cheap shots for someone else, because your mutterings about Julia on Indymedia aren't going to go very far, and you'll most likely just be going back and forth with a bunch of other feds and corporate lackeys.
Your little jabs are not going to slow Julia down a bit, nor will it slow down the global revolution that IS happening, like it or not.
Face it, your house of cards is crumbling, no matter how many Jokers you stack up to fix it;)
Rest well knowing this...
