Stand-Off Between Tree-Sitters and Timber Company Climbers in Ancient Redwoods Gypsy Mountain is Site of 1998 Killing of Forest Activist Humboldt County, CA - Tree-sitters in old growth redwood trees on Gypsy Mountain were confronted with an early morning raid on Thursday Oct. 2, 2003 when a Pacific Lumber (PL) crew arrived iwith five tree climbers working under contract for the timber company, including Eric Schatz, notorious for the reckless and sometimes violent removal of tree-sitters on PL land this spring. The area is named after David "Gypsy" Chain, a forest activist killed by an irate PL logger in 1998 and is nearly adjacent to Grizzly Creek State Park.

Treesits have been maintained in the area that includes critical habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet on and off for the last five years, and one ancient redwood called "Aradia" has been continuously occupied since January 2002.

Pacific Lumber sought to strike a deal with the activists, asking them to vacate one disputed area to allow Colombia Helicopter Co. to remove logs from the steep hillside. In return, PL claimed they will not conduct a raid on the Aradia treesit. Two such raids on the treesit have occurred in the last four months, during which contracted climbers removed all shelter and basic supplies.

After retreating to Aradia, activists learned of the PL climbers' plans to spend the night on the mountain, and witnessed sheriffs supplying PL with a stove and other supplies for an over night stay, contrary to the "deal" verbally offered the activists One sheriff's deputy was seen saluting PL's head of security Carl Anderson, illustrating the scant distinction between the timber corporation and local law enforcement. Sheriff's deputies maintained watch at the gate for more than twelve hours Thursday before leaving around 9:00pm.

As of this morning, It is assumed PL climbers are still on site. Forest defenders are keeping a watchful vigil.

I understand the PL made a legal agreement with David "Gypsy" Chain's parents and family not to log this area in exchange for the Chains agreement not to pursue a wrongful death claim against PL. How will this affect that legal agreement?

I mean, please, with regards to proper etiquette and respect for formal discourse, shut the fuck up. You make no point but to exemplify your own uncaring attitude toward your own time by wasting it on writing such crap. If you want to contribute, please do so truthfully. There's not enough room for liars around these parts.

There was no such deal. Chain's family did sue. It was settled out of court. There was nothing in the settlement about this area. No agreement that this THP not be cut. The agreement said that the tree that hit him and the small surrounding area around the tree would not be touched. A memorial to David Chain was built and the Foest Peace alliance formed as part of the deal too.

If you heard anything counter to this from one of the activists they are lying to you.

So, Squishy Brain, how much does PL pay you folks to write this crap. At least you are creative. Mary Bullwinkle better watch her back. She's like talking to a park bench.

I think you've been bowing a little too low to your Charles Hurwitz idol. Or, another possibility is that there are so many fewer trees now, you're suffering from a lack of oxygen.

Thank u all tree sitters for staying strong in the face of MAXXAM/PL corporate tyranny. The redwoods, marbled murrelets and all tree lovers are most appreciative..

Stay strong and be brave in the face of evil MAXXAM/PL

The tree you refer to as the grandmother tree was not intended to be harvested. I removed it from harvest myself. Thus, the only harm that will occur to Burl (the tree's real name) is from those perched in it. Please remove your platform and ropes from Burl.
Folks are getting quite good at sitting in trees not ever intended to be cut. Perhaps that is the best way to gain attention. You can always claim victory in protecting a tree that is not in danger. Eitherway, your waste of resources is fine by me. But remember this, Burl is not going to be cut, so please stop hurting him.

I suppose burl thinks it's just great that you clearcut the surrounding forest, leaving the area vulnerable to mudslides and erosion. You should get a job as a PL "forester," if that's not your position already.

Selection.
Burl is in a Selective Harvest Zone.

Clear cuts are different (no trees left).

Complicated to the untrained eye, but you'll get the hang of it.

lymantria (lie-mantra) may well be Adam the Marker, judging from his postings. deep in his heart he knows he is a hypocrite sell-out, so he keeps trying lamely to justify his guilty self with technical arguments posted here as comments, though everyday the ugly truth of his THP marking job stares him in the face; if adam had lived in the garden of eden, he would have cut down the tree of life. anyway, he is the midlevel technician most directly responsible for each decision to cut an oldgrowth redwood by PL. one good thing i can say about him is that he is not as much of an asshole as carl anderson(security chief). anyway, he is one of the faster rats in the ratrace. he will likely continue deluding himself, his inner eyes covered by giant dollar signs. a thousand years from now he will be forgotten but people will still look at the giant stumps he leaves as a legacy to his descendants. may they be wiser than he.
