BEIRUT: The Damascus-based Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) claimed responsibility for a mortar attack Sunday on a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip that inflicted no casualties. "A group of our fighters bombarded at dawn the Jewish settlement bloc of Gush Katif with a number of mortar rounds which hit their targets with precision," the radical PFLP-GC, led by militant Ahmad Jibril, said in a statement.

The attack came "in retaliation for the daily crimes against our people resisting and to highlight our determination to pursue the choice of armed resistance and our rejection of any compromise with the Zionist occupiers." An Israeli army spokesman said five mortars were fired early Sunday at the industrial zone of Gush Katif, without causing casualties or damage.
