The SHORTWAVE REPORT 9/19/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Russia, Spain, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (September 19) is up at the websitehttp://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:42) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- The WTO meeting in Cancun was judged a victory by some and a defeat by others- either way, it showed the power that developing nations have when negotiating as a bloc. The US State Dept spends a billion dollars a year trying to improve the image of the US, mostly focusing on the Muslim world- but in the Middle East and Central Asia, the spending has not been effective.
From Russia- The US State Dept issued a new terrorist warning to Americans overseas- the world view of America as a victim after 9/11 has shifted as a result of what many perceive as America’s Imperialism. Russia and China are about to embark on a huge oil pipeline from E Siberia to NE China.
From Spain- A member of Iraq’s governing council thanked Spanish troops for treating the people in a friendly way. Then a discussion of troops from the Dominican Republic under Spain’s command in Iraq. Iran is trying to convince the UN that they are only working on nuclear power, not weapons. Israel took back assasination threats against Arafat, while Spain reiterated that Arafat was part of the solution in the perpetual conflict. There were new kidnappings by FARC rebels in Columbia, and more rebels executed by government forces. A senator from Montana is setting up food exports to Cuba.
From Cuba- The bitterness and resentment of ordinary Iraqis is becoming a bigger threat than terrorists, according to the US Defense Dept. The leaders of Germany, France, and Britain are meeting this weekend to try to put their differences over the war on Iraq away.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
