Google News' Canned Response Isn't Good Enough

by anti-google
Google News wrote me back regarding an email I sent them about their removal of SF-IMC. Of course, they avoid all logic and again assert that "zionazi" is hate speech -- even though zionism is a political ideology, whereas a term like "raghead" is clearly a racial slur and was found in Google News. I am posting their response and mine here.
Hello? Your canned answer is not good enough.

First of all, "zionism" is not an ethnicity or race -- it is a political ideology. Being opposed to zionism is like being opposed to democrats or republicans.

Second of all, "ragheads" is certainly an ethnic slur, yet I also found that on your google news search. "Islamofascist" is a clear religious slur.

I'm sorry, this isn't good enough and your disappointing response makes me sick.

Quoting "news-feedback@google.com" <news-feedback@google.com>:

Hi James,

> Thank you for your email.

> We understand you are concerned that Indymedia articles no longer show up in Google News, and would like to explain what happened.

> Google News continuously crawls a growing list of more than 4,500 English-language news sources. Our inclusion of news sources is done without regard to political viewpoint or ideology. We have a policy, however, to exclude sites that publish pornography and/or hate speech. Consistent with this policy, Google removed Indymedia from Google News because we found stories originating from Indymedia that contained hate speech (not just reporting on hate speech).

We aim to be as inclusive as possible in regards to news sources for Google News, so are working with Indymedia to try and include them again in the future. In the meantime, you can still find Indymedia sites and articles by doing a regular websearch on Google.com.

Ask them to provide examples of stories that promote hate speech. As far as I know, SF IMC was providing a special news page for Google News. Did they treat sf.indymedia as its own or lump it into other (less moderated) indymedia sites as being one and the same?
by Google is right
Google is right.

This website declares that zionism, which supports the existence of a jewish state, is "wrong," no questions asked.

This website does NOT declare that muslims having a dozen or two muslim states is wrong, no questions asked.

Zionism is a "political idealogy" but one that is specifically about jews having a jewish state. Sf.indymedia.org editors spew the IDENTICAL nonsense about zionism that HATE SITES like david duke's and white supremecist sites spew.

Being against zionism and being against "zionists" doesn't just mean being against the conflict with palestinians. Being against zionism and being against "zionists" IN THE MANNER the editors of sf.indymedia.or means being against the jews having a jewish state specifically because they are jews, and the REASONING behind it, and the ABSURD, UNPROVEN accusations against "the zionists" (as a mass generalization) are the same as what's found on hate sites.

sf.indymedia.org constantly singles out israel for things, yet CENSORS articles that single out arab states for doing the exact same things, or worse things.

If a jew does something wrong, rest assured it will appear on the commentary section of sf.indymedia.org

if a muslim does something wrong, rest assured it will be DELETED or moved to the "hidden" section.

the sf.indymedia.org editors do try to delete BLATANT jew-hating articles, but that's more for show than anything else.
by anti-racist
Zionism, which "supports the existence of a Jewish state," ON OTHER PEOPLE'S LAND, STOLEN FROM THEM BY FORCE, is definitely wrong.
by Google is unfair
Articles containing the word "feminazi" comes up on Google News. Under the google team's logic, this shouldn't show up either, BUT IT DOES. I personally think it has a right to show up (as feminism is a political ideology). But, to be fair, they must then see that "zionazi" (commenting on the politcal ideology of zionism) shouldn't be censored either from Google News searches.

Can someone provide the phone numbers/extensions for and/or the names of the appropriate people at Google to contact (like content directors/editors). We progressives need to start a telephone campaign to Google. Can someone get their public relations and community relations department phone number?

Can someone get ahold of a Google employee directory (even a limited one)? Perhaps employees at random should be contacted about Google's censorship as the employees may not know about it (it is VERY possible many might not approve). Some objections/dissension/controversy within the company might be created.
by Enlist the help of other groups
In order to reverse this, we'll need to keep up constant pressure on Google.

Since this is a political issue (despite Google's denials) it might be a good idea to inform other groups who are fighting for Palestinians' rights in order to enlist their help.

Some groups that come to mind are ISM, ADC, CAIR, and possibly others. I'll come up with a list of email addresses of other groups who would probably be interested in taking this up and post them here this evening.

In the meantime, constant non-stop pressure in the form of emails is what is needed by as many people as possible.

bigotry towards Arabs, immigrants and non-whites generally is often accepted on mainstream Internet sites and message boards, just as it is in other media

back in the day, about 5 years ago, I had an AOL account, and sometimes posted on their political message boards

when John Rocker of the Atlanta Braves went off on his famous screed about NYC, AOL permitted numerous people to post about how they agreed with him, frequently with the most blunt, bigoted language, but my posts, in which I explained how this was Klan thought, based upon the history of the Klan, were taken down

AOL caters to what appear to be white male bigots, somewhat similar to how talk radio sometimes does

Google is just doing the same thing, responding to the "market". "Ragheads", "Feminazis", who knows what kind of homophobic stuff they permit, all this is A-OK. Immigrants, especially from Mexico and Central American are frequently called "wetbacks" and worse, and this is no doubt fine, too, just within the realm of reasonable opinion, and if Google took action, a right wing firestorm complaining about persecution of free speech and persecution would ensue

personally, as I said before, hate speech codes just play into the right wing game. For some reason, the left loves them, and then is surprised when the right, being in power, gets the most benefit out of them.

just let anyone post what they want here ONCE, sometimes it's good to know even what the bad guys are thinking, or just what the bad guys believe is a politically good line to promote

by progressive
The argument that google should accept the offensive term "zionazi" because it accepts other offensive terms is hypocritical. It's the same argument zionists use (check above post) that since iran is an islamic state then israel should be allowed to be a jewish state, etc. etc.

No one is going to mobilize to make the world safe for "progressives" to use the word "zionazi." There are a few other battles that could be considered more pressing.
by Israel or America?
Dear Locust,

From the Gospel of Thomas:

47) Jesus said, "It is impossible for a man to mount two horses or to stretch two bows. And it is impossible for a servant to serve two masters; otherwise, he will honor the one and treat the other contemptuously. No man drinks old wine and immediately desires to drink new wine. And new wine is not put into old wineskins, lest they burst; nor is old wine put into a new wineskin, lest it spoil it. An old patch is not sewn onto a new garment, because a tear would result."

As I predicted along time ago when I was banned by the fascists at SFIMC, they have brought about their own demise. They have gone to progressively inane measures to try to hide their idiotic censorship, to the point where they now have a grand total of two threads which are not in the "browse older" gulag!

Ha!

SFIMC - you have no credibility.

Nessie - you are a hypocritical totalitarian.

Your followers - ignorant children and subscribers of the party line who need your protection from viewpoints which challenge yours and theirs.

The recognition of your faux journalism by the folks at Google is wonderful.
by John Q Public
Does anybody really consider this a "news" site? You have to be kidding. An entertainment site maybe, but news no way, not with all the censorship of dissenting opinions and paranoid bablings of people like Nessie. How could anybody take this stuff seriously. Fun to read but take it with a grain of salt. Google made a wise decision. I could go on and on about most of the sf police stories here but I think everybody knows the truth, even if they post otherwise.

For the record, at times the number of threads appearing on the latest comments page is quite small because of the amount of spam that is posted. Here's how it goes: some jackass spams the newswire/comments with the "NESSIE IS SPECIESIST" post or some other nonsense, an editorial person will remove the pssts from the latest comments page. Unfortunately, the code doesn't work in such a way as to then bring back the recent non-spam comments.

You can always email imc-sf-editorial [at] lists.indymedia.org if you're interested in having any discussion where you don't just call us 'fascists' or the like. We're much more reasonable than you think.

Below is the recent testimonial of a ISM volunteer reporting from Nablus. If the actions of the IOF isn't "nazi" behavior, then the word "nazi" has no meaning. Instead, perhaps we should refer to the German soldiers under Hitler as the "German Defense Force"... or simply "Zionazis" defending themselves against the Polish terrorists.

_______

friends,

my apologies for not writing to you all recently, especially those who have sent me worried emails about my safety during the invasion. I have been in the old city of nablus since the first night of the invasion and have been entirely occupied. This is the first chance i've had to get on a computer.

Wednesday night (early thursday morning), around 2:30 a.m. i was staying in the old city when the army came. We were woken up by tanks and noticed soldiers occupying the house across the street from us, so went out to see what was happening. 7 jeeps, 4 tanks and countless soldiers on foot were entering the old city by alleyways and occupying family's homes to use as strategic shooting bases and protection. We spent the night following soldiers, and trying to figure out their plan. Their were several large explosions of sound bombs and explosives that they used to blow open doors to homes and shops. After a very tense night, at early light around 5:30, we headed back for the home we were staying in. At that point a jeep came around the corner announcing what was the start of continuous curfew. Thus the invasion began...

I would like to write about everything i saw and did in this week, but everyday began to blur together and each house or encounter with soldiers is difficult to remember by itself. I spent the days walking the streets of Nablus and the old city, escorting medical workers and civilians, identifying and visiting occupied houses to ask the family what they needed, being present during clashes in which jeeps shot at children throwing stones, and basically trying to interupt and/or delay the army's operations.

During the continuous curfew, people were trapped inside their homes with no access to food, medical supplies or support. Walking out on the street meant taking a chance that a jeep wouldn't pass by or that you wouldn't be shot by a soldier on foot or in a house. The IOF was systematically occupying houses throughout the old city - some for a few hours and some for the entire invasion. They would often move house to house so quickly it was difficult for us to keep up. They used Palestinian civilians as human shields (which is illegal by intl law), taking a woman or young man in front of them by gunpoint as they attempted to break open doors. In the houses, they usually forced the entire family into one room of the house while they took over the rest of the house. The family was imprisoned for as long as the soldiers chose to stay in the house.

In one house, two men, two women and 4 children were kept in a small room with water, tea and bread only. They had no toys for the children, no television or books for the adults and no beds for anyone. When I first met them they were being removed from their house at 7:00 a.m. for the morning soldier's shift change. The children were crying and screaming and everybody looked weary and frightened. This was the third day that they were made to go through this. They told me every time the soldiers shift change the entire family is removed, forced to sit on the street and the men were then used as human shields for the soldier's operations. To check on the family's welfare, I had to physically force my way into the house as a group of soldiers went in. The two toddlers in the family ran in circles around the room, jumping on top of the mother and father. They cried every time the soldiers entered the room.

In the houses, the soldiers usually destroyed most of the family's belongings, ate all of their food, and left behind only a pile of broken furniture and garbage. In many homes, they shot into the ceilings and used explosives to blow holes into the walls. In addition to occupying homes, the IOF systematically destroyed many stores. Each street is now lined with open clothes, falafel, sweets and telephone stores that were completely blown up by the soldiers. Those lucky enough not to have had explosives placed in them were utterly ransacked - children's toys, women's underwear, etc were strewn all over the streets and the sidewalks.

The only way I think I can write it is if I tell specific stories and things that I can remember clearly. I was unable to find time to take notes or sleep enough - therefore days of continous human rights violations and brutality need to be documented by everyone who was involved. These are a few things that stick out the most clearly in my head....

The first day I was walking alone to get some other internationals from the hotel. Soldiers were doing an operation on the street on the way and were shooting at people walking by. An elderly man i know who sells coffee on the streets was frozen in terror as a soldier put a gun to his head and was screaming at him in hebrew. The soldier began pushing and shoving the man and told him that he would shoot him if he didn't move. I escorted the man away from the soldiers, but the soldier still shot at our feet as we were walking away.

One of the most random and dangerous aspects of the invasion are the IOF police patrolling the city. They are much more agressive than the soliders - often using brutal physical violence on passerbys. I have had many run-ins with the police; they also seem to be the most agressive to internationals. One morning we were walking around the deserted streets of downtown nablus and saw a man on his donkey who was heading back to his village after selling his figs in town. A police jeep started tailing him and then stopped just around the corner. We ran up to it and saw the Palestinian half pulled into the jeep where the soldiers were beating him on his head. They let go when we got near and pushed him to the ground. Embarassed at being caught, they drove away immediately when we arrived. As they drove away the driver of the jeep stuck his tongue out at us and started laughing. The man had been beaten on the head and neck, and the soldiers smashed all of his figs into the ground.

One area of the old city, the Al-Yasmeena area, was particularly targeted by the IOF for a number of days. The soldiers systematically occupied house to house, using human shields at each, and destroyed many of the family's belongings. One day they were demolishing many houses. They would blow up one room and the floor of the house would collapse. I don't know how many houses were targetted. When we arrived we were working with the UPMRC to try to stay near the demolitions to negotiate for them not to use human shields. The soldiers were clearly not happy to see us. The threw soundbombs and many teargas canisters at the palestinians, medical workers and us. One group of soldiers was particularly agressive - as we were backing up they singled me out and attempted to take my bag (containing my wallet, passport, photo card, etc). I continued to try to keep it as they pulled it - internationals and the soldiers were then in a slight scuffle in which they were beating and punching us - i got hit on the hip with a gun. They eventually tore the bag and took it. They continued occupying homes - blowing holes in the walls to move from house to house, destroying family's belongings, causing terror to the families, and leaving chaos in each building and area they left behind.

At the end of the fourth day of the invasion the IOF announced that curfew would end from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm that day (a 5 hour break people wanted to use to stock up on supplies and run errands). At 5:00 i was in the center of Nablus when people started to come out on the streets. Immediately, it was apparent that the army was not pulling out. Clashes erupted on all of the city streets. Two tanks and 5 jeeps drove around the streets provoking the shebab to throw stones and continued to shoot randomly into the crowds of people. Tear gas, sound bombs and smoke grenades were used. Soldiers in a tank directly targetted press and medical workers with tear gas. For 2-3 hours this continued, resulting in around 50 people injured. Eventually the people moved back into the old city, realizing that there would be no break in the curfew.

Two days ago I woke to the sound of vendors, cars and general street noise from the old city. For the first time in a week and a half the city seemed to be breathing again. It was an incredible feeling walking down the street. We were told that there was an occupied house on the edge of the old city and so we went there to see if the family needed anything. Four of us walked up the stairs to the apartment and were asked to come inside by the soldiers. When we entered there were 17 people being held in one room of the apartment since 2:00 a.m. Soon after entering it became clear that the soldiers did not intend to allow us to leave. Our friends that were down on the street brought the family food (as they had no bread, fruit or milk) but were not allowed up to the apartment. We were held for over 9 hours in the house until we were allowed to go. During that time we were told we were going to be arrested and were denied making any phone calls. Numerous times we caused a rucus and tried to leave by force, but were stopped physically by the 20+ soldiers in the building. The soldiers were using the apartment as a lookout base for another attack on Nablus that happened earlier that afternoon. As always, the peace in the city was short lived. By 1:00 pm we heard shots from a tank - we continued to hear shooting and explosions all afternoon and evening. The apartment we were detained in was the apartment of a doctor who had her office downstairs. Throughout the day when people came to see the doctor they were capture by the soldiers and brought upstairs with everyone else. At one point a pegnant woman came to see the doctor because she thought she had just lost her baby. She was hysterical by the time the soldiers brought her upstairs in handcuffs. We were able to negotiate for her to leave fairly soon after. When we finally left at 7:00 pm. we were able to take 2 people who were detained but did not live in the house with us, but the rest of the family was not allowed to leave. They were detained for another 8 hours until the soldiers left.

The family i have been staying with during the invasion is incredible. No matter how difficult my day was or awful i felt, when i was with them i always felt calm. Their house, though in the middle of the most intense conflicts in the old city, is a respite of warmth and peace. One of their sons, a friend and our former ISM coordinator, is away in Sweden and two other sons are in prison. Now the family is the father, mother, 25 year old daughter and 11 year-old son. We would occassionally go shopping for the family during the invasion to get basic food supplies and medicine because it was too unsafe for them to go out (and everything in the old city and nablus was closed due to curfew). Their older cousin was stranded in the house since the first day of the invasion, so on the fourth day he asked us to escort him back to his home. His house is in Ras-al-Ein, an area that was heavily occupied by soldiers and had continuos tank fire. The younger son wanted to go with to stay with his cousin for a few days and came with us. Although 11, he always wants to appear very brave and strong - he's been throwing stones at tanks (he says), laughing and peering out the window when there's shots below and yelling at soldiers. When we left the house for Ras-al-Ein, though, I he grabbed my hand tightly and didn't let go until we arrived at the house. When we were stopped by a tank on the way up he squeezed my hand so hard i could barely move it. I realized then, fully for the first time since the invasion started, that regardless of grownup and strong he seems, he's still an eleven year-old boy scarred by the occupation. He has been through more in his eleven years than most people in the states experience in their entire lifetimes. His life has been one that no person deserves, but to him it is not about justness or injustice, it is simply his life.

Please, if "zionazi" is offensive, then so is "feminazi," the ridiculous term coined by Rush Limbaugh, that fat-ass jerk.
Funny how ya'll use a double standard when its ok to call
Arabs "ragheads" and insult their culture. Yes, some Jews may be offended because the term associates them with their worst oppressors, the Nazis (who were supported by such "great
American entrepeneurs" like Henry Ford and Prescott Bush), but look at the state of Israel's treatment of Palestinians and you'll understand why. Ask the ISM and Palestinians about the extreme hate expressed by Jewish settlers towards them and you'll understand why. Learn about how white privilege undergirds the policies of the Jewish state and you'll understand why. Zionism is a form of white privilege and it is ironic that a state that supposedly protects the interests of the survivors of the holocaust can turn around and perpetuate similar policies towards the native people of the region. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. Uninformed American Jews and those poseur Anglo-Saxons who act like jews when Hannukah comes around need to learn from the more informed Orthodox ones who live in Jerusalem and parts of the US who are aware of what's going on and are critical of what Sharon and the settlers are doing.

Google is a joke, but then what do you expect from a corporate shill search engine.
by not white
> Zionism is a form of white privilege

Roughly half of Israelis are not white. White (European decendants) have the highest standing in Israel, just as they do in the US, Canada, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico etc., etc. over people of the other races.

That does not mean that "Zionism is a form of white priviledge" but that Israel (as well as Jews as a whole) are struggling with the same race issues that plague the rest of the world.

Stop trying to race bait.

> Orthodox ones who live in Jerusalem and parts of
> the US who are aware of what's going on and are
> critical of what Sharon and the settlers are doing.

With the exception of some Chassidic sects, the Orthodox are more behind Sharon and the extremists in Israeli politics than any other branch of Judaism. The more Orthodox, the more to the right they are.

That is not to say that all Orthodox are rightists are that their are not non-Orthodox militants, but you will see the harshest rhetoric coming from the more Orthodox groups, The Agudah being the most notorious amongst them.

When will you give up on the lie that Jews are white (they are of all colors, just like Christians and Muslims) and that the Orthodox do not support Israel (so far off base that it is laughable).

SF Indymedia shouldn't have to go this alone. There are many organizations who would probably be willing to get their members informed if they knew what was going on.

I would suggest contacting the following groups. Most of them have websites and might use them to get the word out to their members and site visitors about this.

The more people who know about it, the more likely Google will reverse its decision (which is no doubt based on constant campaigning by people who also write posts here condemning Indymedia for daring to support Palestinian rights).

by No such thing as unbiased media
There is no such thing as an unbiased source.

Every news service has a bias. The major media are certainly influenced by their extremely wealthy owners.

The dishonest news services (practically all the mainstream media), claim to be honest, unbiased, and objective while being anything but. And this is not just incidental, accidental bias, but purposeful, planned editorial policy (like not mentioning Arab civilian deaths or claiming such deaths were caused in a crossfire when very often they were just direct killings).

The honest ones wear their bias on their sleeves. SF Indymedia's bias can be summed up as justice and equality for all including Arabs.

Most of mainstream America believes Israeli lives are worth more than Arab lives. This is racist, but it is so prevalent that it goes unnoticed and has become acceptable racism.

By some definitions, *real* racism exists when an average person in the society barely even notices it. This racist hatred against Arabs exists because of the vicious images and stereotypes the mainstream media itself has cultivated for several decades without any opposition.

To see what real Arabs look and sound like check out this music video by a prominent Arab singer in the Middle East (the images are from Beirut and other parts of Lebanon):

I agree with censoring right wing views but its dangerous to start hiding things close to the topic of the thread. Especially when you are making harsh statements on other threads (that most of this sites readers probably disagree with). sf-imc is selective as to what articles go on it's front page, sf-imc also at its discression "hides" articles and posts. It also DELETES some posts.

Google is selective as to what it places on its "newswire" (No sf-imc "news"). Google however is not censoring in any way what it has indexed in its main search engine as regards to sf-imc.

What is the problem????

Google removed you from its "NEWS" section. It excersised it's editorial rights.

sf-imc do exactly the same.

The term "raghead" seems to be the focal point here.

On Google News it is found zero, zip, nada times......

on the web search engine Google it is found about 5,010 times (not including similar results!)

sf-imc is not included as a "news" site......

Be honest, you are not an independent provider of news are you? sf-imc has a specific political agenda.

in allowing Palestinian extreamist to post rants at will, with no editing of format or content the war of words between the Palestinian supporters and the Israeli supporters has escalated along the lines of the real confilct. to edit one side and not the other has added fule to the fire. the editors might give this some thought.

I would like to see San Francisco Indymedia develop a really fast onsite search engine for looking up SF IMC articles from the last month only. We can use Google for older articles. Use the searchboxes below for that. This would take a huge load off the site servers. Since comprehensive search is very taxing on the servers.

Search.

San Francisco Indymedia. The web. Enter search term(s). You can put quotes around phrases. Click the search button.

Google indexes many more pages of the San Francisco Indymedia site using indybay.org URLs compared to sf.indymedia.org URLs.

Verify this by comparing the number of results found by clicking the 2 search shortcut links below:
http://google.com/search?q=allinurl:indybay.org and
http://google.com/search?q=allinurl:sf.indymedia.org

The search form above uses site:indybay.org to search San Francisco Bay Area Indymedia.
http://google.com/search?q=site:indybay.org

Inputs in the HTML of the search form above have been minimized. This means the resulting shortcut URL will have less characters, and will be easier to pass on, especially in email where URLs that wrap to two lines often don't work right.

---------------------

Search Google News or the web.

Enter search term(s). You can put quotes around phrases. Then click one of the Google search buttons.

Google News does not index too many Indymedia sites. One that it currently indexes daily is Italy Indymedia. Here is the search shortcut:
http://google.com/news?q=source:indymedia_italia

Note that a Google web search will not use the source term. Only Google News uses the source term. Click both buttons in the searchbox above to see. Google News is in beta testing and the "search news" button may sometimes search the web instead. If that happens just click the "news" tab or button on the results page.

You can substitute other source terms. Just copy and paste from the examples below:
source:the_narco_news_bulletin
source:mother_jones
source:guardian
source:common_dreams
source:venezuela_electronic_news
source:pacifica_radio

"source" method for Google News searches of specific sites:
http://google.com/news?q=source:indymedia_italia
http://google.com/news?q=source:the_narco_news_bulletin
http://google.com/news?q=source:mother_jones
http://google.com/news?q=source:guardian
http://google.com/news?q=source:common_dreams
http://google.com/news?q=source:venezuela_electronic_news
http://google.com/news?q=source:pacifica_radio

Or use the correct (according to Google News) name of the news site. Click the links below. Note that until you add search term(s) and click "Search News" again there will not be a link to search that site exclusively. The search term(s) can be added before or after the name of the news site. At the top of the search results there will be a link in the form of "Search news source..." This method does not work consistently. Google News says it is still in beta testing. The "source" method above works more consistently.

http://google.com/news?q=Narco+News+Bulletin
http://google.com/news?q=Mother+Jones
http://google.com/news?q=Guardian
http://google.com/news?q=Common+Dreams
http://google.com/news?q=Venezuela+Electronic+News
http://google.com/news?q=Pacifica+Radio

To get Google (or other search engines) to index all the pages on a website every month or two the Google indexing spiders need easy access to all of the site's pages. So somewhere on the website there should be a sitemap. Or a sitemap spread out on multiple pages if necessary. With all sitemap pages linked to each other. With pages organized by the month or week in which articles were added. Or some other easy browsing or spidering method. The less nesting of pages, the better. The links should be text links that are openly visible and easy to access by the indexing robots and spiders. The Google robots may ignore dropdown lists, hidden or invisible links, image links, etc..

Multi-site Google search forms:

Search San Francisco Bay Area Indymedia. Indymedia Italy. - italy.indymedia.org NarcoNews.com MotherJones.com - Has onsite search, too. The Guardian. Onsite search form, too. CommonDreams.org - Progressive news archive. Venezuela's Electronic News (English). Pacifica Radio. - pacifica.org KPFA Flashpoints Radio. - flashpoints.net ZNet. (English, Spanish). Zmag.org for Choose the site from the dropdown menu. Enter search term(s). You can put quotes around phrases. Click the search button.

---------

Search Search this World Drug War website. Search the web. Akha.org Thailand drug-war death squads, etc. NarcoNews.com - The best news, by far. CannabisNews.com - Comments help a lot. Drug Reform Coordination Network. Weekly news MAP-DrugNews. Mostly corporate media disinfo. DrugLibrary.org DrugText.org Erowid.org - Humans and Psychoactives. Lycaeum.org Entheogenic Database, Community Multidisciplinary Association. Psychedelic Studies Psychedelic-Library.org Yahooka.com directory. ------OTHER NEWS SOURCES:------ Venezuela's Electronic News (English). MotherJones.com - Has onsite search, too. The Guardian. CommonDreams.org - Progressive news archive aporrea.org (in Spanish). for Choose the site from the dropdown menu. Enter search terms such as "evil" and/or other words. You can put quotes around phrases. Click the search button.

On the Google results page you can click the "News" tab. This will pull up results from thousands of news sites indexed daily by Google News. You can then delete the "site:" term since it does not work at Google News. Google News does not index all news sites. To get specific site searches using Google News, you can use these source terms: source:indymedia_italia or source:the_narco_news_bulletin or source:mother_jones or source:guardian or source:common_dreams or source:venezuela_electronic_news or source:pacifica_radio . A less consistently-implemented method is to use search term(s) and the full, correct name of the news site. Such as: Narco News Bulletin, Mother Jones, Guardian, Common Dreams, or Venezuela Electronic News. To search sites using standard Google (not Google News) searches one can use either site: or allinurl: followed directly (no space) by the site's homepage URL. Use allinurl: for homepage URLs with slashes in them. Use allinurl: also to find out how many of a site's pages Google is currently indexing. An option to search news sites directly is via a specialized MAP/DrugNews search form. Choose from any of hundreds of news sites in the Google search form here: http://www.mapinc.org/media.htm -- The Google search form is at the bottom of the page there. Choose the area of the world, or the beginning letter of the publication, etc., at the top of the web page. Then use the dropdown menu in the search form to select the specific news site. Enter search terms. Click the search button.

"Zionazis is accurate term
by face it Thursday September 04, 2003 at 01:43 PM

The Israelis are acting just like the Nazis did to the Jews, aside from the gas chambers, which are open to debate anyway.
Israelis who are Zionists are rounding up Palestinians, demolishing homes and businesses, starving them and controlling every aspect of their lives, just like the Nazis did to the Jews. ...."

There's nothing in that post that bothers the anti-Zionists enough to even mention it, apparently. You're helping Google make its case against SF-IMC.

Regardless if this site was in the wrong, what google is doing is very hypocritical. They can't just single out one site and leave the rest go. If they have a policy, they SHOULD enforce it at all times, not just when they feel like it.
by an anti-Zionist
Assuming the quote above was by an anti-Zionist (and not just someone posing as one), it is wrong. The reason I didn't respond to it is 1) I wasn't sure if it was genuine and 2) I just don't see a reason to expend a lot of moral energy on this issue (just like I don't spend much time on the slave trade, the Armenian genocide, the Spanish Inquisition, Ghengis Khan's depredations or any number of other historic injustices). If Jews were currently being oppressed and ethnically cleansed, and the entire world sat on the sidelines watching them, I would stand with them as best as I could -- just as I support the Palestinian struggle for freedom now (as well as the Iraqi struggle for *real* freedom from outside invaders).

That being said though, it is wrong to make light of these horrible things or deny them. I don't believe there is anything to debate as far as the Holocaust is concerned -- it was a horrible thing and should be remembered so that it is not repeated against anyone.

The only debatable thing as far as the Holocaust is concerned is how it has been used to justify the Zionists' theft and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. Norman Finkelstein has done a great job in documenting this in his book "The Holocaust Industry."

Also, to conflate all anti-Zionists with what one of them says (assuming once again that the post above is real) is the same as conflating all Arabs with the actions of a few extremists or blaming all Americans for the actions of the US government or even blaming all Jews for the actions of the Israeli government.

An idiot above said: "It just goes to show that the greatest threat to our Freedoms is zionism and its thought-police."

My response: Sure thing mr. david duke. really brilliant thought process there.

The guy right above said "it clearly is censorship" or something (paraphrased).

My response: Google has the right to pick which sources it deems "news sources." They are doing nothing wrong. It is their choice. And they are right, indymedia is not a news source. There is already too much garbage on news.google.com already, like some "jihad" sites and "intifada" sites and al jazeera.

by just wondering
When is Indymedia going to stop enabling these Zionists to disseminate their vile, racist propaganda?
by just guessing
I guess that will happen right after people like you stop insulting "Zionists" by accusing them all (even most don't) of spreading vile, racist propaganda, when they (the "Zionists") won't need anymore "vile" tones to counter dishonest and hateful anti-Zionist posts.

Not the argument. It would be better if, since they do not accept "Zionazi" that they also not accept "feminazi" or "raghead."
by Not there
So far "raghead" was mentioned on news.google.com only in one article and it was a part of a quote, not used as a term by itself in context.

And as of 1:38am ET, no articles come up that use that term.

But indymedia isn't a news source, that's why it doesn't belong on a news site.

The following is NOT a two wrongs argument.

Google has a censorship policy which targets hate speech.
SFICM has a censorship policy which targets view points with which its editors disagree.

Rather, it is a "SFICM is waaayy more wrong than Google" argument.

The idiots on here who are mad because Google has errantly let some (what the idiots consider to be) hate speech slip through, may as well argue that speeders who drive 8 mph over the speed limit should not be ticketed unless those who drive 7 mph over are ticketed as well.

1. The LEFT sucks at debating. Where's that liberal talk radio call-in show we heard all about?

2. SFICM editors are ridiculous hypocrites crying about being taken off Google's news list, but censoring posts on a daily basis MERELY BECAUSE THEY DISAGREE WITH THE IDEOLOGY.

The term "terrorist threats" is a racist one in my opinion.

It assumes that we here in the US and Israel have a right to do anything whatsoever to Arabs (like kill them en masse) and they have no right whatsoever to strike back.

Stop murdering them and stop supporting Israel's ethnic cleansing and murder of them and you won't have to worry about your self-made "terrorist threats."

The monopoly of the "right", a political ideology consisting predominantly zionists is threatning the natural flow of information and freedom of speech, through shameless censorship.
Zionists, not Jews, own most if not all of the mainstream media outlets, controling with an iron fist what is disseminated to the public at large.
To balance that monopoly, IMC were established, to promote alternative points of view and since the monopoly could NOT own this forum, they used their connections to eliminate it by censoring the address from the public.
The freedom of speech is ours!
by Freedom? On SFIMC? Hah!
"The freedom of speech is ours" ???? Who are you? One of the hypocritically fascist editors?

This 'freedom of speech' includes the freedom to censor your opposition? I see. It's kind of like, "all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others."

Censoring hypocrites.

Censoring logical challenges by people who are not zionist or israelis or anything except someone who has a different opinion than yours is not some kind of offset to a conspirator-dominated media. You're merely attempting to silence opposition. Period. Don't rationalize it with your paranoid dellusions - of conspiracy and your own grandeur.

Don't be so damn foolish.

If some of you had your way, no one would be saying anything about anything. Even a discussion on the weather would be considered offensive to someone. I'm heartily sick of it all.

If the world is not allowed to criticize Israel, then the world should not be allowed to criticize any other country.

It reminds me of a recent Air Farce skit entitled "Nothing is Happening", a take-off on CCN, wherein a big production was made out of that simple heading.

TIme spent bitching and complaining here about what's this of what's that could be put to better use working towards peace in the world, ALL THE WORLD.

by Sample Letter to Google
For anyone interested, here is the letter I sent to Google concerning this issue.

Please feel free to change at as you wish and send it off to Google:

To Whom it May Concern:
I am deeply concerned about your banning of the San Francisco Indymedia site from your news archives.

This is clearly politically motivated and is very troubling.

In a time when average Americans need to be exposed to as many different viewpoints as possible about the Middle East, you have chosen to silence a significant source for viewpoints opposing the mainstream views. This comes at a perilous time as Americans need all the accurate uncensored information they can get about the region and our policies towards it in order to hold their officials accountable.

SF Indymedia is distinguished by the fact that its articles are from a wide array of sources and are contributed by the readers of the site in an attempt to share information which is usually ignored or misrepresented in the mainstream media.

A free press is essential for a democracy to function properly. Your banning of this site is just one more blow to a smoothly functioning democracy in this country because people will have one less source to get the information they need in order to vote with their conscience on US Foreign Policy towards the Middle East. And in turn, this bodes badly for America and the world.

Sincerely,
...
by AngieCorrector
Angie, it isn't being said that "no one has a right to criticize Israel." That isn't the issue.

The issue was that the criticism of Israel has now gone into the realm of the absurd, and SOME (not all) people doing it - and I'm not saying YOU, just making a correct generalization - intentionally twist the truth in such a ridiculous fashion that one must question the true motivation of the people doing the twisting.

Now, please don't read this and then spit off one of your "Oh, so Israel never does anything wrong?" nonsense interpretations of what I said. I didn't say that. I said there's valid criticism and insanity. No one on any side should be offended by valid criticism, provided the same standards of criticism are applied all around the globe and to everyone. A perfectly reasonable thing to want.

Have a good day.

Believe you me, they censor the hell out of these threads - and don't let them tell you it's a narrow policy targeting hate speech or something.

I had an editor censor my threads who admitted he was 'sick of' my 'crap'. It contained no profanity or name calling.

Some of the editors are good, others are authoritarians.

"Angie, it isn't being said that no one is allowed to criticize Israel".

I didn't know I was your enemy, nor a propogandist. Interesting.

Basically you are saying that you want the statements made on this sight to go unchallenged?
by A few more things, editor man
You have no way in hell to know which posts are mine. So, go for it. Your authoritarianist power is more limited than you imagine, thank goodness.

BTW - your use of the 'petard' phrase might score points in coffee shops, but I think it is crude.

Your policy to disallow challenges to your supporters threads makes them look like idiots when they go out of this site, into the real world, were thinkers destroy their arguments in a free speech environment. Ever wonder why your crap doesn't fly outside of S.F.? (see also, on talk radio). It's because your ideas fail in the marketplace if ideas.

Angie said "Well, sir/madam, guess I must be living not on this planet. Guess I cannot believe my own wee ears, believe my own tired eyes. Guess all those nasty posts directed to myself here have been misinterpreted then. Well, well, well!."

Angie, reasonable people get angry when inaccurate/dishonest/absurd claims are made. Reasonable people generally do not get angry when accurate, realistic claims are made.

Criticising Israel or any place, person or thing is obviously always valid provided that the criticism is fact-based, realistic, AND the same standards of criticism and judgement are applied to other places, persons or things.

I mean this constructively and wish you nothing but the best.
by Logic dude
Editors, it is totally understandable for you to dislike someone or something that, in your opinion, is not right. However, it is absurd, and dishonest, and not helpful, to then try to hide/ignore FACTS and REASONABLE ANALYSIS that do not fit with that view. If you hate X, but someone makes INSANE, ABSURD, DISHONEST claims about X, you should not accept those claims as truth just because you hate X. And if you hate X, but facts arise that show X to be in more positive light, then you should be honest and incorporate those facts into your views, and if that results in your view changing, so be it.

However, you appear to have taken a stance where certain countries are your "enemy" and people who don't want those countries to die are your "enemy," and you appear to believe every single negative thing anyone says about those countiries no matter how absurd and untrue they are, and you appear to want to censor/hide any facts or developments or realistic perspectives that cast those countries in a positive light.

You should examine yourselves. Everyone should examine themselves, including me. But I'm not the one who is so dead-set in my views that I have to put my head in the sand (or hit the Delete button) when new (or old) information exists that should cause me to perhaps slightly alter my thinking.

by Editors Should Resign
How dare you feel that you need to protect me from the posters whom you have deemed to be the 'enemy'.

Who do you think you are? Resign now.
by Angie
Excuse me, sir/madam:

With all due respect for your expressed concern on my behalf, please note:

a) I do not like being patronized;

b) I do not like being stifled;

c) I do not like being expected to change who I am, and what I believe in because you are only wanting "the best" for me.

If you are so concerned about "inaccurate, dishonest, absurd claims" being made, strange I have not seen you going about the Board here becoming a "corrector" of all the lies and disinformation being tossed out by those who blame the entire damn conflict on the Palestinian peoples. You've "corrected" others as well? Or is it your assertion that "reasonable people" exist on one side of this debate?

I'm not sure what "reasonable" people you are referring to, sir or madam, but this reasonable person gets angry when she is told she cannot believe her own eyes and ears.

If, and when, I need "correction" here, I shall enlist the aid of someone I admire tremendously because I know the advice I receive will be righteous and wise.

I thank you for your expressed concern.
by So in other words,
you're going to stifle any dissent to the 'party line' here.

Right?

"That's what you say. We say, you lie and your analysis is bogus."

You can call something a lie, make it disappear, and it'll be just like it never really happened, right?

And you seriously expect Google to think of you as a "news" site? To take you seriously as a 'news' source? You don't even take yourselves seriously enough to critique yourselves over how accurate something is - much less allow others to critique your stance.

Journalism isn't about putting up everything from A to Z and hoping some of it's true, and hopping up and down and screaming loudly if it's disproven or disagreed with. It's researching to find out if something's true, and THEN reporting it. If it can be proven false, it should be done before it's reported and then not plastered out for everyone to see.

Think of the difference between the Weekly World News and, oh, PC Magazine. Both publish, both accept ads, both have readerships who believe what's reported in them.

Which readership is more likely to be affected by whether or not something they read is true and verifiable?

You've got a lot of power here. You could be a source of a lot of good change. But if you want to play with the grownups in this journalistic stuff - you've got to look at how you come across. And you don't come across as a news site, you come across as a group blog with paranoia frosting.

You demand the real world fits you. That's not the way it works. The more shrill your demands, the less likely it is that you'll get what you want.
by Like it really matters, right?
"That's what you say. We say, you lie and your analysis is bogus. But you have a perfect right to lie and present bogus analysis and something more than the lame crap that it is. But not here. Go start your own site, you ungrateful, freeloading, parasite liar."

"I'm not protecting you. I'm protecting our right not to have our time, money, energy, skills and talent be hijacked by people like you. You're a parasite. Go start your own website. Stop freeloading."

Dissent runs both ways. If your opinions can't stand dissent, you might want to examine why they're so fragile. If they're so self-evident, you shouldn't need to spend so much time deleteing dissent.

You want folks to stop 'freeloading', make your blog here a subscription-only site. That's the only way you'll be able to do it. You might be able to get some money out of folks - at least once.

You want to be recognized by the 'status quo', which is what Google is, then you've got to adapt your stance. You don't, and you won't be recognized as a valid site.

Of course, you could try to make that a selling point. "We were banned from GOOGLE for telling the TRUTH!"

Hmmm. On second thought - maybe not. You don't want the status quo, but you DO want to be recognized and validated by it. Seems to be a bit of a dichotomy there.

Good luck getting it figured out.
by to the editors
You've decided that Israel is evil and anyone who wants Israel to remain Israel is your enemy. You've decided that literally every single bad thing anyone, anywhere, makes up about Israel is true and valid. You've decided that when anyone disputes some of the absurd ridiculous things that get said about Israel, that person is your "enemy," even if they're telling the truth.

And when people ask why the standards of criticism towards Israel are not also applied to arab countries, a perfectly valid question, you censor them.

And when people point out facts pointing to anything that some arab leaders or groups do wrong, even if it's totally not disputable, you censor those facts and try to hide them.

You're not good people. You're not true peace activists. You're not progressive. You're dishonest and rather disgusting.

Mr. Nasty, you should be careful in what you wish for. You might get more than you were expecting.

And you should have signed your "name" (or one of them). It didn't take long to tell who you were.

And if you are not totally well ashamed, you should be. In fact, if I viciously attacked anyone in this fashion, I'd not show my face amongst the general public again. Nor should you. You're a disgrace to humankind.

Your little game is obvious, but I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. It is most readily apparent. (I wonder how long it took you to come up with the title "Corrector of Angie"?)

HOWEVER, I didn't see you condemn the creep in the post above and his malicious diatribe against the hardworking editors here. It doesn't get much more unreasonable than that - not to mention bloody damn cruel.

This is not our site. We are not (as one of the editors so correctly stated) paying for it. We are not providing time, energy, and talent to maintain it. The editors do that, and if you abide by the minimal rules they have set out, you will be fine. Who can have a problem with that? Only those bent on hijacking same for their own agenda, that's who.

They allow us to come here and express our views, exchange information, links to research we seek, share an occasional chuckle, and, if necessary, they will pass on the benefit of their intelligence and expertise. I admire and respect them and often wonder how they can stand it at all, reading what we, their guests, churn out here daily.

My friends, in situations such as this, silence is NEVER golden.

All in good time, lad. Let Mr. Nasty above stew for a while or forever. What do I care? I do not like nasty especially when it drips of hate.

Oh, there is no need for me to throw out translations. I'm from Canada, remember? Your "Canadian priss"? We speak English here, and being a multi national country, just about every other language besides.

However, should I feel inclined to deviate from the norm in the future, I shall translate as I go just for your own little ole self.

And I'm going to move on now, lad, and respond to the other note I saw there from you. But always remember that "tout comprendre, c'est tout pardonner".

Meaning "to understand everything is to forgive everything", a wee French phrase there. No, I don't speak French, but some phrases I like, including the one above.

"HIstory Buff is a Retard" is right. HB's contention is a bloody lie not even worth trying to refute using evidence to the contrary.
HB's assertion is in a sense tantamount to denying that Libyan Jews were sent to death camps in Europe, for example; a request by you to show documented proof to substantiate this horror would be akin to what you asked "HIstory Buff is a Retard".

Do you want to descend to HB's level and dabble with Holocaust denial?

"Von Bolschwing was deeply involved in intelligence work--and in the persecution of innocent people -- for most of his adult life. He had joined the Nazi party at the age of twenty-three, in 1932, and had become an SD (party security service) informer almost immediately. In the years leading up to 1939, von Bolschwing became a leading Nazi intelligence agent in the Middle East, where he worked under cover as an importer in Jerusalem. One of his first brushes with Nazi espionage work, according to captured SS records, was a role in creating a covert agreement between the Nazis and Fieval Polkes, a commander of the militant Zionist organization Haganah, whom von Bolschwing had met through business associates in the Mideast. Under the arrangement the Haganah was permitted to run recruiting and training camps for Jewish youth inside Germany. These young people, as well as certain other Jews driven out of Germany by the Nazis, were encouraged to emigrate to Palestine. Polkes and the Haganah, in return, agreed to provide the SS with intelligence about British affairs in Palestine. Captured German records claim that Polkes believed the increasingly brutal Nazi persecution of the Jews could be turned to Zionist advantage -- at least temporarily -- by compelling Jewish immigration to Palestine, and that the Haganah commander's sole source of income, moreover, was secret funds from the SS.

It was in the course of these negotiations that the young Baron von Bolschwing gained the trust of Adolf Eichmann, who was at the time an obscure SS functionary specializing in intelligence on Freemasonry and Jewish affairs for the Nazi party. The acquaintance was more than a casual one, for von Bolschwing went on to play a central role in arranging conferences between Eichmann and Polkes in Vienna and Cairo, contacts that established Eichmann as the SS's Jewish affairs expert and laid the foundation for his later career as the architect of the extermination of European Jewry.”

Omiyeh--

Does it occur to you perhaps that the Zionists might have done the Haavarah agreement in order to save Jewish lives? The life of my uncle Ze'ev, who spent his life on a kibbutz beart Haifa was one of those lives saved. Omiyeh, not that it matters to you, but none of the rest of the world was prepared to take in more than token numbers of German Jews and later of East European Jews. In the first years after 1933, the Nazis were intent on driving Jews out of Germany--though they had already imprisoned many and murdered some as early as the first year in power. By the late 1930's things were moving rapidly toward genocide. My own mother, Owmiyeh, who was born in 1924 and raised in Berlin, had nowhere to go because by the time she and her mother fled in 1938, Palestine was already effectively closed by the British. Fortunately, there was some money in the family (there is that damn Jewish money again, eh Owmiyeh?) with which they bought fake Ecuadorian visas, which made it possible for them to get onto a sealed train across Spain from southern France to Portugal in 1940 after the Nazis had arrived in southern France where they had taken temporary shelter. Most of the German Jewish refugees whom my mother knew in Nice in 1938-40 ended up being murdered. Well, its a long story in my mother's case, Owlmiyeh, but she and her mother managed to get to New York via Cuba by 1941 with all of their money gone and my formerly wealthy grandmother spending the remainder of her life working in a hat factory. They were among the relative few of the lucky ones who survived. One of out of every three Jews in the world were slaughtered by Hitler, Owmiyeh. Try to imagine what the impact on any people would be to lose one out of three. The Haavara agreement saved, I'm not sure how many German Jews--perhaps 50,000-75,000. But in your mind, apparently, the Zionists were Nazis for having saved a handful of their own people from extermination from the Nazis. To be accepted as good guys in your mind, the German Jews ought to have sat there passively until the Nazis came to murder them.

by I told you so.
A Zionist defends collaborating with Hitler. And in this day and age, too. You'd think they'd have learned by now. I guess not.

To save "perhaps 50,000-75,000" German Jews (for their own purposes, I might add), Polkes and the other Zionists collaborators helped empower the Nazis. Once sufficiently empowered, the Nazis then went on to kill, at the barest minimum, twenty to thirty million other people (some say as high as fifty million), six million of whom were other (mostly non-German) Jews.

And he wants us to think that it worth it, just to save "perhaps 50,000-75,000" German Jews.

Do the math. He did.

Moreover, s/he omitted to mention the Haganah, which answered to Ben-Gurion and the rest of the Yishuv (the pre-Israeli entity in Palestine), who cooperated with the British against the Nazis during WW2.

Even if you accept -- as I don't -- the oversimplification that "the German Jews didn't fight back", what it means is that they had faith in the fundamental humanity of the non-Jews they lived among, and did not believe that the Germans had devolved to the point of instigating a crime of such proportion that a new word had to be coined to describe it: genocide.

Were the Jews of Germany wrong to have faith in the humanity of non-Jews, nessie?

I was amazed to read of your unwarranted censorship of IndyMedia. My response is the following. I am sending this e-mail to 50 people for starters, more lists later if you do not correct the matter. Second, perhaps only symbolic, I will stop using Google as my main search engine and will go back to Yahoo or others. "The Jews of Germany are every bit as guilty of this as the rest of Hitler’s enemies."

If everyone who opposed to Hitler had had joined together early enough, he might have been stopped. But who would have joined with Jews to save them? AntiSemetism in Germany was across the board not just by the Nazi party. Moreover Hitler was popular and had majority support. Its hard to know how many people supported him since nobody would admit it after the war ended, but in the case of France's extermination of the Jewish population some has been clearly shown to have been independent of the Nazis. AntiSemitism in Poland is still bad (despite there being almost no Jewish population), but Hitler also hated Poles and exterminated a lot of the nonJewish population of Poland. What were Polish Jews to do? Join with a local population that also wanted them dead? By the time Zionist organizations started making deals with Nazis to save lives, there was almost zero hope of an uprising in Germany being effective. The Zionist Nazi connection exists in the same sense that a Palestinian Nazi connection existed. During wars people have to make deals to save lives but one shouldnt judge a movement based off what it had to do in times like that. Would you blame Indians in Uganda for the massacres carried out by Idi Amin? Im sure some had to make deals to get out alive, but thats what one has to do when one is a hated minority and one doesnt have much choice (since fighting would have been suicide)

That said, the problems of Zionism existed long before the Nazis and were more colonialist in nature.
Early Zionist settlements were openly racist even in the case of Arab Jews (the racism existed only partly because of Zionism itself and was more because the colonizers were white Europeans). Current Zionism is a pseudoreligious nationalist belief system that favors one ethnic group in the region over others. Zionism should be condemned in the same way that Hindu Nationalism (the RSS and BJP) and Islamic nationalism should be condemned. The Nazi connections with the RSS in India are much stronger than Zionist Nazi connections, but even in that case support for the Nazis was partly just antiBritish in nature and aimed at independence so the BJP should be judged on what it does now (genocide in Gujarat) rather than bringing up the connections with Nazis.

The Nazis have become a be all and end all for every argument by conservatives or liberals in the US, Europe and Israel (the rest of the world could care less). Animals rights groups are bad since some Nazis were for animal rights. Zionism is bad because some Zionists made deals with Nazis to get people out of concentration camps. Palestinians are bad because many Palestinians sided with the Nazis during WWII. Are we to condemn Anarchists and Communists for the rabid antiSemitism in the precursor movements like the String Shoe and Poor Conrad (who according to Engles actually called for the "extermination of the Jews" http://felix2.2y.net/english/febk3e.html ) ? Populist hatred by the poor always tends to be directed at rich minority groups (look at all the recent attacks on Chinese Indonesians), during wars a lot of people make strange alliances (Makhno is often accused of having sided with White Armies after the Red Army turned against him), and groups are often very different from he movements that produced them.
by buff
>who would have joined with Jews to save them?

Good point. However, it doesn;t go far enough. The split between Jews and gentiles among Hitler’s enemies was only one of many. They all fought against each other harder than they fought the Nazis.

>What were Polish Jews to do? Join with a local population that also wanted them dead?

This did, in fact, happen, though alas it wasn't the norm. But it did happen. There were Home Army fighters who died defending the Warsaw Ghetto and Jewish partisans who fought along side Poles in the countryside.

Read Primo Levi’s If Not Now, When. He relates a couple of interesting incidents.

But alas, it wasn’t the norm.

>Animals rights groups are bad since some Nazis were for animal rights.

No. Not even close. Animals rights groups are bad because they behave like Nazis. It was Nazis who came up with the idea of using force to deny innocent human beings the right to choose not to die slow, painful hideous deaths that animal testing could prevent. The ALF is carrying on in their tradition, and with the same methods. Brownshirts, too,, trashed labs so that animals could live instead of humans.

>Zionism is bad because some Zionists made deals with Nazis to get people out of concentration camps.

Wrong again. Zionism is bad because, like it’s predecessor, it is an ethnic based, militaristic, expansionist nationalism. It’s all about lebensraum for the chosen people. Only the ethnic group is different.

>Palestinians are bad because many Palestinians sided with the Nazis during WWII.

Palestinians aren’t bad. Some Palestinians are bad. But then, some Israelis are bad, too. Should we then condemn all of both Peoples? I think not.

Au contrair.

"The rise in the price of commodities which had called forth the revolt of the peasants in the Netherlands, brought about, in 1493, in Alsace, a secret union of peasants and plebeians with a sprinkling of the purely middle-class opposition party; and a certain amount of sympathy even among the lower nobility. The seat of the union was the region of Schlettstadt, Sulz, Dambach, Rossheim, Scherweiler, etc. The conspirators demanded the plundering and extermination of the Jews, whose usury then, as now, sucked the blood of the peasants of Alsace, the introduction of a jubilee year to cancel all debts, the abolition of taxes, tons and other burdens, the abolition of the ecclesiastical and Rottweil (imperial) court, the right to ratify taxation, the reduction of the priests' incomes to a prebend of between fifty and sixty guilders, the abolition of the auricular confession, and the establishment in the communities of courts elected by the communities themselves. The conspirators planned, as soon as they became strong enough, to overpower the stronghold of Schlettstadt, to confiscate the treasuries of the monasteries and the city, and from there to arouse the whole of Alsace. The banner of the union to be unfurled at the moment of insurrection, contained a peasant's shoe with long leather strings, the so-called String Shoe, which gave a symbol and a name to the peasant conspiracies of the following twenty years."
-F Engles "The german Peasants war"

So does this mean that the movement many think of as leading to modern Communism and Anarchism also started the process that lead to Hitler. This "Laced Shoe" group was in Germany so it seems like it could be the source of some of the propaganda the Nazis used in their rise to power and is perhaps the reason they called themselves National Socialists? Blaming the Capitalists was even back then closely linked to ideas of Jewish conspiracies.

People with crazed ideas of US and THEM blaming a minority group they think is running things:

"> It's US versus THEM and to feel sympathy for your enemy makes you worthless to the cause.

Yeah, basically. We are up against a ruthless, amoral and extremely well organized foe. To them, we are nothing but livestock. They starve to death thirty to forty thousand people a day, almost all of them children, just so they can live in unspeakable luxury.

Sympathy? Give me a break, They don’t deserve sympathy. They don’t even deserve mercy. They’re not worth the powder to blow them to h*ll. If I found them on fire, I wouldn’t p*ss it out.

Among the ruling class, no damage is collateral. Not a one of them is innocent. Damage: read it, do it. Make it count. And above all, get away with it. Then teach others how to do the same. Together we can cast these monsters down. "

The people who run this site appear likeminded in that they want to single the 6 million jews in israel out for having a jewish state that is an imperfect democracy yet still does allow 100% of its citizens of any religion to work and vote and live and be fine, yet they do NOT single out the 500 million muslims in 20 or so muslim countries for having countries that are less fair, and in many cases outright horrible. Let's start with the boards of directors of the multi-nationals, and work down from there. These people are a tumor on the global body politic. Time has come for surgery.
by but
I thought Nessie liked HLS and the NFL. HLS is clearly a multinational and the NFL is moving in that direction since it is always trying to break into the European market (its also worth more than many multinationals). If the Anarchist Revolution started with attacks on HLS and the NFL, would that create a civil war among Anarchists. If HLS were destroyed in the Anarchist rebellion, Nessie would see the Anarchists as mass murderers for standing in the way of his magical pig livers.

I guess the idea is that Anarchists should have no sympathy for the heads of corporations as long as those corporations don't do anything any Anarchist might see as productive or entertaining? I guess Rupert Murdoch is safe since many Anarchists probably like the Simpsons. And Intel is safe since people use computers.... Would you really risk not having magical pig livers, the NFL and the Simpsons if that were the result of an attack on the rich behind the companies that produce those things?

Sure in a future Anarchist utopia those things could be recreated but with HLS out of the way for years (while the Anarchist utopia is being set up) there would be no pig livers to save Nessie's friend's lives!!! Maybe the Scientists at HLS would immediately organzie a worker owned animal testing lab once HLS was gone? I dont think so. With HLS scientists earning over $100,000 a year in many cases (especially those scientists working on the most complicated research like the pig livers) why would they support a rebellion that would in the end see rich Scientists as the enemy? Sure you say you wont go after them at first, but how far down does "work our way down" imply?
by and you wonder why your banned
I'll bet you that HLS and the NFL are not run by Jews. I wonder if that has something to do with Nessie's blog's selective hatred.

"This First Congress of Soviets was dominated by the intelligentsia---doctors, engineers, journalists. They belonged to political parties known as Menshevik and Socialist-Revolutionary. "
http://www.lib.byu.edu/~rdh/wwi/memoir/RusRev/RR1.htm

"After the Russian Revolution the new Soviet government adopted a very positive attitude toward science but retained the view that science and politics are interwoven. Almost every Soviet book on the history of science in the USSR contains some reference to the official view that science and Soviet socialism are mutually Supportive. The outside observer might note that the Soviet government has indeed strongly supported science, but that the history of Soviet science contains episodes such as the Lysenko affair, illustrating that the influence of politics on science can be harmful as well as beneficial. "
http://www.hssonline.org/teach_res/essays/graham/graham.html

The Soviets made a lot of advances in science and medicine and there was little if any downtime since everything was taken over by the state. In a way this was easier than now since there wasnt a corporate medical research establishment. Of course, doctors and scientists were "rich" by normal Soviet standards so its hard to say that the Soviets attacked the wealthy. They attacked many of the landed gentry and business owners but they didnt attack the rich for being rich. They mainly attacked those who opposed the revolution and when they tried to go after a class (like Kulaks) it was destructive and counterproductive.

A flaw with the Soviet system was that since doctors, managers, and scientists were well paid but knew that they could make more under Capitalism, they never really fully bought in to the Revolution. If you look at who is running things now in Russia you will see a mixture of managers (party members) and professionals from the former Soviet state.

The Soviet Union is an example of how a state can "destroy capitalism" while retaining things like animal research and scientific advanced. It also had flaws and Stalin used popular antiSemitism to both scapegoat a group for problems and attack Trotsky (who had to change his last name from Bernstein since he new the Soviet public was too antiSemitic to support a leader with a Jewish last name)

Jew hatred was a part of German Socialism from early on despire many Socialist leaders being Jewish. Germany, more than any other country, was run by banks (that acted like the Keiretsu in Japan) and there still was a stereotype throughout Europe of bankers being Jewish. Populism and scapegoating rich minorities go hand in hand. Look at the attacks on Korean business owners in LA during the LA uprising or the attacks in Indonesia and the Phillipines on Chinese business owners. In Germany, Hitler rose to power on a corporatist party line but with one aspect of populist socialism thrown in to get a portion of the working class behind him.

Criticizing Israel is fine. The US funds Israel more than other countries in the Middle East so its understandable that a focus should be put on Israel by activists. But there is some residual antiSemitism one sees at antiIsrael protests that cant be explained away by hatred over the treatment of Palestinians. If you look at the white protesters who only show up when Israel is an issue there is something a little strange about the politics. If you look at the people who have to bring up Zionism when a protests is about anything (there are people who hand out leaflets about Zionism at antipoverty protests), one has to ask why. if you listen to some people on this site, Zionists control the US media, Zionists are directing the actions of the US government, Zionists were behind the attacks in Indonesia, Zionists supported the Nazis etc... Sure there are rich people who support Israel, but the underlying feeling one gets from Zionist conspiracy theorists seems very similar to the populist antiSemitism that helped Hitler appeal to the working class. It cant be that the rich are the same as us except with more money they got doing what most working class people would have done if give the opportunity, they have to be evil and part of some cult like the Bilderbergs and practice weird rituals at places like Bohemian Grove or they have to be part of the Illuminati or be Masons or they have to be Jews or Zionists... Seeing Capitalism as a systematic problem that doesnt involve "evil minorities" takes more thought so creating a mythical rulling class can be exploited by rogues who want to popularize Socialist or Anarchist ideals.
by the world sucks
"Only business perceived to be exploiting the community, and business owners perceived to have disrespected community members, were attacked. "

Can't the same be said to be true of the attacks on Chinese business owners in Indonesia and the Phillipines? Since you included the word "perceived" I guess that would also include antiJewish violence in Europe too?

Is the assumption that all of the violence during the LA uprising was "rational violence" where community members debated over if a business was exploitative and if it wasnt just a personal racist view of one rioter the business was saved? That seems unlikely. Or is it your view that none of the rioters could have possibly held anything but rational anger directed at those Korean business owners who were obviously part of the rulling class. Do you think that it is impossible that any American living in LA who took part in the riot could have possibly been racist against Koreans? I guess rioters are a select group who dont hold the bigotry of the general population?

if a bunch of poor white's in the south feel exploited by a Korean or Indian owned store, I guess its not a hate crime if they smash the windows? Since the majority population of Uganda felt exploited by the slightly richer Indian population, did that justify the actions of Idi Amin? Is the difference that fewer people were killed in LA, or that is was a populist riot (pograms were populist riots), or that the ends (raising awareness of the poverty in LA) justified the means (attacks on ethnic minorities). To say that racism isnt racism since people didnt move across town to carry out attacks makes no sense; when there is spontaneous rioting, people tend to attack things nearby. if it was logical "class war" violence why did people stay in their own neighborhoods and not attack the rich parts of LA?.

The general public in most countries is racist (and sexist and homophobic and often hate people with disabilities and people who look overweight or are in any way out of the ordinary). Im sure you went to public highschool in the US and I cant imagine that you didnt notice this there. Groups perceived to be poorer are scapegoated and groups perceived to be richer are scapegoated. In Bosnia and Rwanda the results were horrible. I'm guessing you would agree that scapegoating one particular ethnic group because they are perceived to be rich is wrong? During the early populist revolts in Europe, Jews were attacked along with the nobility and rich business owners. Some of the Jews attacked may have been business owners but many were not. People held a hatred directed at an ethnic group and when riots broke out those groups were targeted. If you travel through much of rural America you will still find this sortof of antiSemitism in the population. You will also find similar stereotyping and scapegoatingof people from China and South Asia. The stereotyping and scapegoating is across the board and not restricted to poor Americans, but when the stereotype is that a group is doing well at the expense of "Americans" you can bet that the danger comes during populist rioting.

Its just a little distriburbing when activists fail to recognize that racism is often mixed with class war propaganda. Its possible to confront issues of class wthout racism but ideas of class war are far more simple for a population to pick up on when "those people" running things and causing all problems look different, worship a different god, dress differently etc... Perhaps thats why class warfare hasnt caught on recently among poor whites. From Clinton, to Bush, to business leaders like Ross Perot, the most powerful people these days seem to look and talk more like the working class than liberals or radicals do. Instead of blaming business leaders and the government for the economy, its far easier to blame people who look different like Arabs, immigrants, Asians and of course Jews (who are still seen as lawyers or Hollywood agent types). Whats the answer? I dont have one, if there was a way to stop ethnic hatreds there would be a lot fewer problems in the world. But to assume that all racism is the same as classism and that racism has to be by the rich against the poor is misguided (during the partition of India was all that violence class related?)

Of course, there were racist elements out in the streets, too. I saw some myself. But they were in the minority. They just got the most publicity, that all.

Even Ames, Iowa rebelled. Towns don't get much whiter than Ames. I remember the announcer describing the scene on CNN Headline News. It was two in the morning. The night shift was running the mix board. The story got spiked when the day shift showed up, a not uncommon occurrence. A couple of hundred white kids were chasing a hundred or so white cops down the screen as fast as their legs could carry them. The cops were fleeing at a dead heat sprint. "Racial unrest" he called it.

Even Pinole rebelled, for chrissake! Berkeley, one expects to rebel. But neighboring Pinole!?! Even Pinole rebelled. Mostly asian and white, upper middle class Pinole High kids shut down Route 80 for hours. The day before, protestors from Berkeley and Oakland had shut down the Bay Bridge. Unrest is contagious. People get caught up in it.

by what difference does that make
Yes, the reason people were ticked off made sense and was valid. But does that justify attacks on immigrants for being immigrants?

I'm not condemning protests against police brutality but the unwillingness of activists to recognize that racist tendencies can come out at time like that too. Most people held vigils after 9/11 and some crazies attacked Arab owned businesses. The public is racist and when people feel lke they can get away with attacking their neighbor (when there is public outrage over anything) hate crimes occur.

Instead of saying that some bad things happened and that racism may have caused certain immigrant groups to be attacked but most of the anger was directed at the police, we have on this site people now trying to say that the attacks on the Korean businesses was a good thing. Thats messed up. I guess racism against Asians is now ok among some activists. Im guessing its white activists writing this garbage because I have heard many African American activists actually address that there was a problem in LA and New York of racism against Koreans and other Asians within the African American community (its even directly addressed in the mainstreamy movie Do The Right Thing).

I set up some more comprehensive Indymedia search
forms using Google here:
http://www.geocities.com/tents444/indyplus.htm

Using "inurl:" instead of "allinurl:" allows one to
add search terms too.

Feel free to pass on the link. I only have a few pages
on that geocities web host. It provides 3 gigabytes a
month of free bandwidth. So it should be OK for
awhile.

Feel free to pass on this message, the web page, the
search forms, etc.. Use or adapt them in any way.
Anywhere.

Google may not be perfect but it is better than
nothing. And their indexing of Indymedia sites seems
to be only be a few days behind. Even when doing
regular Google (not Google News) searches.

Hello Eco Man and Nessie, this is just to say hello, I am returning to the world of internet after two months without internet signal in all this frontier, but I am back.

Google and the most of internet technologies sucks, and will keep the same until the merchants and economists are knocked off from big technology deccissions making matters on our planet Earth...

Glad to read from SF indymedia again...
